halz Posted April 6, 2006 Share #1 Posted April 6, 2006 I've been offered a 240Z repair manual in good condition. The publisher is "Clymer" (cover picture attached) and it appears to be a US publication. Has anyone get a copy out there? Is it any good (content-wise?) Thanks. Zedrally Posted April 7, 2006 Share #2 Posted April 7, 2006 Halz,I've got one here.I'll probably get bashed up for this, but I find it inferior to the other versions available.MOM Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/19529-clymer-repair-manual-240z/#findComment-162544 Share on other sites
EScanlon Posted April 7, 2006 Share #3 Posted April 7, 2006 I have two or three versions of that book and the one with the cover you posted is, in my opinion, a MUST have item.Again, IMO, that Clymer beats the Haynes, the Chilton and several other publications. In some respects it is as good as the Factory Service Manual and in others I think it's even better. There are diagrams and pictures not found in any other publication in that book. Sadly, later versions of that book, (same cover but now covering through the 260, and the Red cover with the same picture but now covering the 280) were "trimmed" and the information became so watered down that the Haynes became a better manual. That original version has diagrams for the individual wire and individual connections (whether single or multiple wire) that put in ONE book some of the service bulletins that Nissan put out. Check out the section on the Vent and Heater Hoses!I think you'll find that it is, literally, invaluable.Enrique Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/19529-clymer-repair-manual-240z/#findComment-162546 Share on other sites
EScanlon Posted April 7, 2006 Share #4 Posted April 7, 2006 I began posting and MOM's post came before mine. For MOM, owning a 73, I can see why he wouldn't like it. The book only goes up to the 72, and by the time the 73's came out there had been enough changes to warrant a new edition.2¢E Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/19529-clymer-repair-manual-240z/#findComment-162547 Share on other sites
Zedrally Posted April 7, 2006 Share #5 Posted April 7, 2006 The one I have is the 3 model version. As I posted above it's inferior.I stand by that statement.Never seen the original, so perhaps I shouldn't have commented at all.In fact I wasn't aware that there were 3 different versions available.Halz, you could consider a FSM for the RS-30. There are only minor differences if one isn't fussed about the interior and it's still available.Where there are differences, I usually consult the Haynes SM, this is usually confined to torque settings. If it's diagrams your after, then I just use the HS-30 Parts Catelog and print out what I need. (Can't get better than that)! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/19529-clymer-repair-manual-240z/#findComment-162548 Share on other sites

=Enigma= Posted April 7, 2006 Share #8 Posted April 7, 2006 I've got the red edition covering 1970-78. I am quite happy with it so far, but I have no other comparison except for the factory service manual for the 73' and that's all inclusive but very "dry". Personaly, I prefer to use these sorts of manuals and only use the factory manual to fill in an gaps and resolve discrepencies. Not that the factory manual is perfect, but it comes straight from the factory so it should be more accurate......in theory. halz Posted April 7, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted April 7, 2006 I have the Haynes one already (its OK-ish, came with the car). I also have the FSM engine manual for S30 (green book) and would like a copy of the FSM chassis manual for S30 (blue?)... I also have the Wick Humble book which is a great guide for (dis)assembley as well as differences btw the models. mlc240z Posted April 7, 2006 Share #10 Posted April 7, 2006 got the '70-'74 version and find it very useful.i've found that a combination of the Clymer, Haynes, FSM, Parts Microfiche, Wick's 'How to Restore", and Monroe's 'How to Rebuild OHC Engine' will cover just about everything you need. some sections are better (more detailed pics, diagrams, and descriptions) in one book than others. by bouncing between the different books, you can get a better understanding of a problem and hopefully, the fix. 2003z Posted April 8, 2006 Share #11 Posted April 8, 2006 ^ What he said. If it saves you a little time or aggravation down the road by having a little gem that the others don't have, it will be worth the money. I've got the 70-76 edition, and its been a help.
