Aussie260z Posted May 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2006 Was wondering if anyone knew about 4spd auto conversions,Im sure i saw a faq on this website a while ago, but i cant seem to find it,I have an 280zx and was thinking of installing a 4spd auto gearbox,I have done some reading and it appears the gearbox from a 300c or earlier 300zx (with the vg30e engine) can be made to work in a 280zx,Apparently its got the mechanical, not computer controlled lockup,Anyone know how i can get this box this to fit? Also - i have a 1986 VL Commodore with 4spd auto lying around, anyone know if this gearbox can be used in the 280zx?I have been told that it can, with a change of bellhousing, but wasnt to certain if any other mods were required, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/20016-4spd-auto-conversion/ Share on other sites
Darrel Posted May 12, 2006 Share #2 Posted May 12, 2006 I have done the swap in my zx turbo. I used an '83 maxima transmission that was rebuilt to turbo specs. Extra clutch for 2nd, valve body drilled for higher pressure.http://www.zcar.com/articles/twheel/4spdauto/'88 maxima shifter handle cut down and the shift plate dremeled to accept the square shift lever.http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/280zxt/ftm005.jpgthe brackets have been thrubolted with the tunnel sandwiched by 2 plates of steel.http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/280zxt/4spdauto.jpgcurved cross member or whatever you can fit there that will follow the tunnel at it's straightest portion. The brackets I made out of 2" x 3" square tubing then cut and drilled.http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c301/dlh2460/280zxt/4spdauto4.jpgIt is expensive, and not for the faint of heart. New exhaust, new drive shaft etc. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/20016-4spd-auto-conversion/#findComment-167229 Share on other sites
Aussie260z Posted May 16, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted May 16, 2006 Thanks for that mate, alot of great information there,I think im just going to end up going with a 5spd manual, prefer to move away from the auto box,Anyone know what is involved in sticking an RB20DET or SR20DET gearbox into my 280zx?I know im going to need pedal box, slave & master cylinders and suitable connecting hose,Maybe a shorten tailshaft, maybe modify the rear gearbox mount and i know i will have to swap over bellhousings,Anyone know of a write-up of this conversion?I guess any 5spd from an S13 model skyline or late 80's Skyline gearbox is what im after, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/20016-4spd-auto-conversion/#findComment-167635 Share on other sites
g72s20 Posted May 16, 2006 Share #4 Posted May 16, 2006 I think a member here "Drunkenmaster" has done or is doing just that! I remember seeing some photos of the mods required. Do a bit of a search on him and see what you come up with. From memory he is in Victoria.Jim.
