Both bases appear to be metal, not plastic as suggested in an earlier post to this thread.

Arne, I dug my old knob out of storage and it is chrome plastic peeled off.

I have a replacement OEM knob, but I have to dig out the 4-speed emblem from this one...gotta think about this for awhile so I dont crack it.

After seeing Arne's thumbnails I had a thought about how arrive at a new, proper shift knob. One could chuck the larger (new knob) in a lathe and turn it down. (Chuck an appropriate threaded rod to hold it of course) The chrome plated plastic base could be turned down to a shoulder and an appropriate tapered ring of stainless could be glued in place. (Or aluminum)

To save the old shift knob chuck it in a lathe to remove most of the plastic. New polyurethane could be applied and the lathe used to turn it and polish it. One would want to experiment and debug any issues with making polyurethane stick to such a repair on a spare before commiting. This would be the best method IMO.

I like the old shift knob and completely understand the desire to keep things the same. I've used other shift knobs but the orig looks and feels "right". The numbers on the repro don't stand out as much as the orig.

JimmZ,

To correct a new knob, I would remove the emblem, chuck the knob with compression through the hole(put no load on plastic threads) and turn the new knob down to the same size/profile. I would leave the plated plastic alone; it is so close, even side by side (once the wood portion of the knob is correct) they could be mistaken for one another. When the turning is complete, stain and then reinstall the emblem. The wood portion of the new knob is not only too wide, but too tall.

OK, I know i'm like lttle late in this but i seen some of you say you used to sell amco knobs in tha day and was wondering if anyone besides me have an Amco Safari Rally Knob with tha tiger face as tha emblem?

I'll post pics when i go to my storage this weekend if this helps unless somebody post one first. ~Z~

Tiger face? Do you mean the Datsun lion? Some people wrongly refer to it as a Griffin but it's a lion. Those are still available through Rallye Enterprises.

NOPE, NOT THAT ONE BUT MAYBE CLOSE.

THYATS SAD, I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER WHAT MY KNOB LOOKS LIKE ^_^

I DO KNOW IT'S A DARK WALNUT, RED CLOSIONE EMBLEM AND SAYS SOMETHING LIKE ~SAFARI RALLY WINNER OR CHAMPION~ ALONG WITH THA YEAR OF VICTORY.

I THINK IT HAS THE SAME LION DESIGN AS YOUR ORANGE KNOB THOUGH BUT I'VE NEVER SEEN YOURS BEFORE.

I'M TOO YOUNG FO THIS KINDA MEMORY ^_^
