Recently an 82 280ZXT was given to me. The body and interior is rough, the rust has completly taken over and the wiring harness is hacked up! On a good note, it has a rebuilt motor, upgraded fuel system with a JWT ECU and it runs but not the best. I'll get some pictures of it up tomorrow as I need help with what is on this car. The owner passed away and I never met him so I'll have to figure out what's on this car with your help.

Where to begin on making it run right is my main question for now.

Ultimately my goal is to obtain a good bare shell (240/260/280???) and swap the complete drivetrain out of the 82. I want to build this into a weekend road course car.

A little history on me. Currently my daily driver is an 03 Dodge SRT4, so I'm familar with the turbo concept but willing to receive education on this car.

My location is Atlanta Ga. and would love to meet with locals to learn more.

Welcome,

There is a big local club for the Atlanta area called the Georgia Z Club, they have lots of resources local to you and at least one most excellent member (MikeW) that shares his time and tallents with this club too. If you PM him, I am sure he will get you the club info.

I am in Savannah, and doing pretty much what you are talking about doing, putting a '83 L28ET into a "72. the car is stripped on a rotisserie, with just one last day or two of body work left before sealer and then...wait for it........

paint!

Thanks Will. The monthly club meeting is actually tonight so the timing is perfect:

Finally figured out some of the things done and added to this car.

JWT Upgraded ECU package consisting of ECU,440cc inj, Mustang Cobra MAF, POP Charger Filter, MSD inline fuel pump.

Aftermarket fuel rail and FPR (brand unknown)

An intercooler (brand unknown)

Autometer Guages

B&M short throw shifter

Larger throttle body (brand unknow)

Possibly an upgraded turbo (can't find any name or specs on the housing and no internal wastegate appears to ever been on it)

Tial Wastegate (not sure which model but it has Sport engraved on it)

Scat Pro Car Seats

HKS Electronic Boost controller (not connected at the moment)

The head is stamped with P90a. The motor was overhauled not too long ago I was told.

Thats what I've found so far...oh and the nightmare intercooler piping, hacked up engine harness and what knows hoses running everywhere.

If anyone can identify the unknown parts please respond the brand and model # if possible.

The car has been running really bad the past couple days, sputtering, running so rich it's spitting soot out the tail pipe and idling up and down constantly (it idles around 1100 to 1200 rpm). I found split fires in it so headed to Advance Auto and picked up some NGK's and installed them. Still same issue.... Without a manual I went through all the wires/sensors verifying they were plugged in good and I came accross the o2 sensor, with a spliced in wire and traced it back to the ecu. I untaped and disconneted it while the car idled, and here's the kicker...the sputtering disappeared and was replaced with only a slight hessitation when giving it some throttle. The foul overpowering fuel smell disappeared also.....WTH! In my years of dealing with FI motors I've never seen one run this good with the o2 sensor disconnected. Anyone care to elaborate this one?

I also noticed the fuel pressure was only around 25 or so psi at idle, so I upped it to 40 to see what would happen. It smoothed out a little so I took it up to 45 which it seemed not to like as much so I took it back to 40. Now I know without it running properly and using a wideband to monitor the A/F it would be hard to get a recommended FP setting, but what ballpark should I shoot for?

I then took it out for a spin and must admit it spools a little faster, but seems to be a bit less underpowered compared to before it started running so rough. Hopefully the o2 sensor is the problem and that's to blame for these problems. Oh yeah, also it boosted to 4-5 whole psi before running rough and now I only see approx 3 psi.

Any and all opinions will be greatly appreciated. Also, keep in mind this car was given to me and the owner passed.

In the 1st picture, what the heck is going on with the air regulator????
