Carl Beck Posted October 29, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 29, 2006 Hi Bob:Maybe the seller didn't lie. Could be he was simply using a different context in making his remarks, as opposed to the context in which you took it.Rare - well compared to the number of Red Mustangs sold in 1970... A Safari Gold 240-Z was a rare color.Rare - true, go to a Z Car Show and Safari Gold Z's aren't really all that common today... all to many have been repainted Red or Silver...In the context of the color mix of 240-Z's received by the Dealers in 1970 - Safari Gold was among, if not the, most common color. The thing is - when people see a "mustard" colored 240-Z with it's 30 year old, badly faded paint they go ... uck... In turn they don't repaint the car that mustard color...On the other hand when they see a fully restored Safari Gold car at a car show - with it's bright and shinny Safari Gold color - they usually like it a lot. Looks "Period Correct"...When people make very general statements... like "its a rare color"... you always have to ask them for further elaboration on that statement.Just a thought....FWIW,Carl B. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/22088-how-rare-is-safari-gold/#findComment-187470 Share on other sites
Arne Posted October 29, 2006 Share #5 Posted October 29, 2006 I think Carl hit the nail on the head on the re-paint issue. I think lots of the Safari gold cars got painted other colors over the years. A shame, actually, as the gold color is really distinctive these days. I had the pleasure of seeing two gold 240Zs last weekend on our local cruise - see pictures at October PDX gathering. Walter Moore Posted October 29, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2006 My 71 240Z was originally "gold". I found the "faded mustard" color under all the other paint. From what I can tell it was painted over twice. First white, then black. I sanded the paint off the outside, but inside, under the plastic panels and carpet it remains that ucky mustard color. My current plans are to paint the car lime green. (Both my wife and I like it.) So much for originality. 71safarigoldz Posted October 29, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted October 29, 2006 hey thanks alot carl for the tip True I havent seen any around where I liveinnortheast PA. Infact I have never seen this color and have been a z head since the first one I bought in1982 it was a orange 72.....It was one of the reasons I bought the car because I thought It was a fitting color for the early 70,s It has origonal paint a I,m in the process of a complete restorationwith the car. I could see why it does not appeal to some but as soon as its done I will post pictures...as to the ones that don,t like lets see when its done this spring Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/22088-how-rare-is-safari-gold/#findComment-187568 Share on other sites
EScanlon Posted October 29, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 29, 2006 Don't let the "non-likers" dis-illusion you. It does grow on you, and before long, you'll not be worried what the "non-likers" think of it.Here's a few photos for you to look at:http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8949&cat=500&ppuser=1490http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8919&cat=500&ppuser=1490http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=8920&cat=500&ppuser=1490E¢ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/22088-how-rare-is-safari-gold/#findComment-187574 Share on other sites
Victor Laury Posted October 29, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 29, 2006 I've never owned one, but I've seen the "Faded Mustard" and have also seen Safari Gold in it's full glory. What a wonderfull complex color it really is. buffed out and waxed, it's deep enough to fall into.
