OK - so I know 'check it on ebay' posts are a bit annoying but this one strikes me as interesting. Here is the new listing from a brand new user to ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-1971-Datsun-240Z-Low-Reserve_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6187QQihZ001QQitemZ110055747195QQrdZ1

Beautiful huh?

Now look at this site. I bookmarked this 2 years age when I was searching for a Z:

http://www.personalbestseminars.com/240z.html

Back then it had 51,000 miles and was in Vancouver. Now it has 68,000 miles and is in Illinois. The pictures from the site are basically the same ones from the ebay listing but years and miles have elapsed in between.

Odd huh?

I sent the seller a note with a few questions and will advise.

With all the metal work that has been done, I'd want to see pictures of the process in progress. He said the quarter panels were replace and done correctly - I'd want to see what he considers a correct job to be...

Not a bad looking car from the pictures... but you'd want to closely inspect this car before buying. I don't think he'll meet his reserve with "pre-approved" buyers only...

FWIW,

Carl B.

(Slightly off topic) I don't think EBay threads are annoying, especially since I may not see everything that is listed...as I am trying to establish comp sales for my Z in re: collector car insurance, being made aware of restored Z sales is very helpful.

With that said, car looks like a pretty good restore/refresh/whatever. Missing some decals, polished valve cover is wrong, interior doesn't photo too well. Would be nice to see some "process" pics as well. I hope it brings good money!

Me thinks... REALLY interesting!!! I am truly amazed that you put this together after all this time. Of course, I am anxious to see what this guy says or even if he responds at all.

Long time ago had a guy on Ebay selling a nautical compass for a hefty price and trying to pass it off as an original. I wrote him documenting the fact that it wasn't.... no response of course. Finally, after agonizing over it for days, I wrote the two bidders explaining my views and what I suggest they consider. Both were extremely grateful that I had written and both withdrew their bids. Would I do it again? Probably not but am happy that I did do it in that case.

A strange listing indeed. The old listing in Canada is correct in identifying the car as '70 while the new Ebay listing has it as a '71, even thought the pic of the ID plate on the driver's side door jam clearly shows a production date of 4/70 and the VIN #02761.

I like to discuss the interesting Ebay listings that involve Zcars or rare Z parts, etc. For those members who don't like the Ebay posts, well, they can choose to ignore them and read other posts that they find interesting. :)

I believe the listing is a scam. I have reported it to ebay, I would not be surprised to see it pulled in the next 24 hours. We will just have to wait and see.

I agree with you. Thanks for reporting. I was going to do the same since I can't alert the secret bidders. I've reported to ebay as well. I'd hate to see someone lose several thousand $$.
