Kerrigan Posted February 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2007 The body shop is putting the 1971 Fairlady Z (JDM 240Z) back together and don't have a clue about the rear hatch weatherstripping!!!Is there any weatherstripping actually put onto the rear hatch itself or is it all on the body?Is there a description or diagram somewhere I could look at?I'm afraid they are screwing it all up!!! HELP PLEASE!!!Thank you! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23213-rear-hatch-weatherstripping-help-needed/ Share on other sites

Kerrigan Posted February 8, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted February 8, 2007 Thank you! Looks like something is glued on the upper corners of the hatch itself. Zak's Z Posted February 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2007 If you're talking about #7 rubber corners, they are listed for 280z 2+2's only. What part exactly are you having trouble with? BRE-240Z Posted February 8, 2007 Share #5 Posted February 8, 2007 The body shop is putting the 1971 Fairlady Z (JDM 240Z) back together and don't have a clue about the rear hatch weatherstripping!!! You need these parts from Nissan: 76910-N3000 76911-N3000 76911-N3000 See the attached diagram. This is what my Nissan parts guy told me, and it works well..... The rear hatch outer gutter weatherstrips have changed since the original 240Z type was produced. The only one available now (since 1978 actually) is the 260-280 type. The vertical pieces on those do not touch the hatch, the rubber is only there to cover the sharp edge of the gutter seam. My trick is to take two upper pieces which are still made like the original and cut straight sections out of them to use on the sides. That way the material is just like the 240 style all the way around. You will need to join the pieces carefully using weatherstrip cement and some small tubing that fits inside the tubular section of the top and side pieces. This will keep the ends of the sections butted together properly. MikeW Posted February 8, 2007 Share #8 Posted February 8, 2007 The diagram looks to me to be exactly the same as the Black Dragon diagram posted by Mohamed. They use the Precision aftermarket kit and parts 5 and 6 even show exactly the same profile as in the hand-drawn diagram. Z Excellence Posted February 8, 2007 Share #9 Posted February 8, 2007 When I did mine last year I took the hatch off because it helped get to the upper wheatherstrip better. Once you get it glued on dont close the hatch for a day or two or the weather strip will get pulled out of place on the lower edge. Also loosen your latch on the frame just a tad to allow more space for the new weatherstrip. Hope this helps. Ya, but he gets extra marks for drawing the cross section, and coloring in the lines too. A for effort, he deserves a happy face sticker Zak Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23213-rear-hatch-weatherstripping-help-needed/#findComment-198575 Share on other sites

It has the tubular cross section all the way around the hatch gutter. It would be a lot easier than piecing together the original upper pieces. Just a suggestion.Dan Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23213-rear-hatch-weatherstripping-help-needed/#findComment-198585 Share on other sites
EScanlon Posted February 8, 2007 Share #12 Posted February 8, 2007 Bryan, you may have inverted the part references. According to the microfiche (Club CD) the 3 part (2 P/N) outer weatherstrip was in use to at least July 76. IIRC it was explained to me that the two side pieces couldn't be had or sourced but the center piece could be, and that using the center piece extended to fit both sides was not a problem.Your explanation is excellent otherwise, good diagram too.E Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23213-rear-hatch-weatherstripping-help-needed/#findComment-198590 Share on other sites
