xtce Posted February 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted February 20, 2007 I just picked up a used center console and need help on what this part is. It is located on the passenger top side of the console. The wired end is connected to a 3 pin connector. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23355-help-me-identify-this/ Share on other sites
MikeW Posted February 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted February 20, 2007 After market manual antenna switch? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23355-help-me-identify-this/#findComment-199937 Share on other sites
moonpup Posted February 20, 2007 Share #3 Posted February 20, 2007 It's an antenna switch for the early Series 1 radios. Looks like someone might have changed out radios and mounted the switch on the outside of the console, as they probably couldn't find any where else to put it. It doesn't quite match the pics of the NOS part I have, so my guess is it's either a very early part or maybe a switch from another Datsun or Japanese model from the same era. Arne Posted February 20, 2007 Share #4 Posted February 20, 2007 Interesting. It does appear to be the antenna switch from an early AM radio. Even the wire colors appear to be right. Mine (Series 2, 7/71) only has the up arrow on it, same as in moonpup's pictures. My original radio owner's manual also shows only an up arrow, and no down arrow. But maybe earlier cars had both arrows? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23355-help-me-identify-this/#findComment-199939 Share on other sites

Nota280 Posted February 20, 2007 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2007 It is the stock antenna switch for a 1978 280Z. When aftermarket Radio/CD are installed, there is no room to mount it in the proper place. moonpup Posted February 20, 2007 Share #7 Posted February 20, 2007 DOH!....I should have checked xtce's profile first. Would have seen he had a 77 280 and that would have narrowed the field somewhat. (Also might have helped if I had ever owned a 280. ) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23355-help-me-identify-this/#findComment-199972 Share on other sites

(Also might have helped if I had ever owned a 280. ) There must have been several varieties of these switches. Just last week I pulled a different type out of a 77 280Z. The AM/FM radio mounted a switch above the tuner dial. At least Nissan stayed consistant with the connectors. moonpup Posted February 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted February 21, 2007 Yeah, I checked the radios on eBay and a 75 or 76 had the one like the 72 Z's and a 78 had the one like yours and xtce's, which is very similar to the early Series 1.Weird...seems they went back and forth with switch styles. xtce Posted February 21, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted February 21, 2007 I won this console on Ebay awhile back and think it was from a 78z. Anyways, I installed it today along with new carpet. The console came with all the wiring and switches. I used the switches with this console. After installing, everything works fine except now my turn signal lights do not work at all. Not sure what caused this, but I do have my original ones and might put those back in. Also there is a ashtray light bulb with 2 wires which I didn't hook up, not sure where to connect them. I need to get a good wiring diagram.77 2+2 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23355-help-me-identify-this/#findComment-200032 Share on other sites
sblake01 Posted February 21, 2007 Share #11 Posted February 21, 2007 Check the connectors on the passenger side right behind the front of the console. I used to intermittently lose my turn signals until I pulled both of those apart and cleaned up the terminals. Also check the hazzard switch since the turn signals share that circuit. When I got my 78, the PO had cleverly mounted the antenna switch in the 'choke lever' hole. By doing so, of course, he had to cut the console which ruined it. That was the first item I bought (the console) when I began the refresh of my Z. xtce Posted February 22, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted February 22, 2007 it was the hazard switch, i replaced it with my original one and now it's working. Still can't figure out where the 2 wires from the ashtray light hook up to.Thanks! sblake Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/23355-help-me-identify-this/#findComment-200108 Share on other sites
