Sound Deadening ....Post OP

Hey Guys,

I'm considering putting one of the sound deadening products into my 73 240Z. I have read through the archives covering your fabulous inputs regarding this subject. However, I'm wondering how the various products have held up over time. Has anyone encountered any additional rust problems on the floor, doors, side panels etc.. Has the material stayed in place well. You get the idea....I'm looking for the post op analysis on the materials and techniques used.

Well on my '73 I used about 75 sq ft of B-Quiet ultimate . Found it to be easy to work with and it seems to have done the job intended. I applied it over the interior of my Z . All the interior was removed and the Z was a rolling shell at the time . After paint, this was when I installed the product. Nun of which have come loose any where. It was meant to help deaden the resonance in the sheet metal which it did vary well . I am happy with the outcome. Gary

If you are worried about rust just pain the whole of the interior of your car with Por-15, then lay down the B-quite or other sound deadener. With a proper job of painting with Por-15, you won't have to worry about any rust (at least in your lifetime).

Prep-work is vitally important…change that to “critically” important. Putting any kind of sealer/deadener down without taking care of any rust problem is just asking for problems. As a matter of fact there is no doubt you will have problems. Therefore, be sure that before you start you have done all the prep work to get any kind of rust taken care of (POR is great by the way).

I have installed ‘Second Skin’ products and I have been extremely happy with it. I opted for a two-step system, consisting of a butyl product, (Damplifier) and a noise sheet, (Over Kill). Dampilifier was a breeze to put in, easy to cut, adjust, re-position etc. The noise sheet requires a spray adhesive and that was more problematic. Once you get both sides sprayed it will stick and in tight spots it was hard to work with and make any kind of minor adjustments. My solution then became to work with smaller pieces and for larger sections I would spray one side, wait till it glued down well and then lift off the un-sprayed piece and spray underneath it and lay it flat.

The results with Second Skin are simply amazing. They are a great company to deal with, very knowledgeable, friendly and certainly for what you are getting, the price is right. There are cheaper products out there and there’s even Home Depot/local roofing places as mentioned in many old posts. I did not want to go that route and am glad I went with Second Skin. Since I just recently completed this project I can’t give you a very detailed longevity report. But, so far so good. A far as rust is concerned it is unlikely I am going to get under this stuff to check it out. I do know I got to everything I could possibly find and anything that remotely looked suspicious got attacked with POR. Since the outer part of my car is and has been Ziebarted it will be difficult to identify rust from the exterior. So, my fingers are crossed and am hoping for the best in the years to come.

I had seen that article on the sounddeadnershootout but hadn't gotten around to reading it until last night. Wow....that is a fantastic piece of work and research. Well, I'm not convinced to use Dynamat or the Second Skin stuff. Maybe a combination of both.....

I have a couple questions about your install... Does your Z have the drain holes in the floor and are they plugged with the rubber grommets. This is the case with my car....So did you put down the Second material right over the rubber plugs or what. Also along the side of the threshold there are access holes into the rocker panel area. The same question here... Did you put the sound deadening material over those holes as well..

I asked the same question before I put mine sound deadening material down and the response was why not, cause what difference does it make. Only don't do it if I plan to have a boat load of water in my car I need to drain, which I didn't :classic: . So I kept my rubber drain plugs, but they are sealed with silicone, covered on top by sound material and finally coated on the bottom side with Herculiner bed liner.

To answer your question, the Second Skin went right over the rubber grommets in the floorboards and over the holes on the side rails as well. First, I took the grommets out. One did not look the greatest with a bit of superficial rust around the hole so I cleaned that out, POR’d all around the holes and the second skin went over it. I figured that in 34 years I never used the holes so it’s unlikely I will do so again in the next 34. I can well imagine that it would be a pain to remove the SS and the noise mat that is glued to it but I really would not worry about it.

How long has it been since you installed the B-Quiet material? Did you apply it to the outer door skins as well? I'm really worried about rust forming underneath this material especially on the floor and doors.

I have had the B-Quiet installed for about 4 years now. I have not had one problem with it coming loose or any rust. How ever I prepared the surfaces vary will with POR using it inside the doors and on any metal surface that was bare metal and some painted surfaces as will. I did apply it to the outer skin of the doors as will as the rear fenders, as far as I could reach. Also to the backs of the plastic trim panels in the hatch area and inside the hatch and spare tire well . I covered the fire wall up to and including the cowl . About the only place I didn't put it was the underside of the roof . This material seals to the metal and if you have treated the surface with POR and done it properly I cant see how it can rust. Unless it comes from under the car. By all means DO NOT use any insulation like the pink stuff for attics, in the doors and the rear fender cavities . It will muffle sound but will NOT allow any air flow and you WILL HAVE RUST PROBLEMS . Gary

I found a good deal on Dynamat Extreme at Amazon. I bought a Bulk Pak (36 sq ft) for $129 plus free shipping (this is better than 1/2 price). Now I just have to wait for the weather in Minneapolis to warm up some so I can get out into the garage and get to work.. I've got some POR15 on the way as well..

George, I too an the original owner of my Z. It's hard to believe that 34 years have passed by so quickly. Damn .....and they say that time passes even quicker with age.....But my Z time machine takes me back.....
