choua1855 Posted May 7, 2007 Share #1 Posted May 7, 2007 hi, i have a 73 datsun 240z and both of my turn signal don't work. i dont really know what's happening, because i replaced the switch with a new switch and they still don't work. i checked the fuse and it looks good. when i pull the hazel switch the both turn signals do flash as they should, so i think i might be electrical problem but not sure. thanks everyone in advance for all your help. BuDavid Posted May 7, 2007 Share #2 Posted May 7, 2007 I'm not an expert in this, but isn't there a relay for the turn signals? maybe it is faulty if so..but for the time being, avoid turning so much:p Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/24251-turn-signal-dont-work/#findComment-208734 Share on other sites
choua1855 Posted May 7, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted May 7, 2007 i am not sure where is the turn signal relay is, if there is one. if relay is the problem, how should i fix it, get a new one or is it fixable? thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/24251-turn-signal-dont-work/#findComment-208743 Share on other sites
superfunk Posted May 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted May 7, 2007 As far as 'not working'.Do the lights not come on at all, or do they come on and not flash. If they dont come on at all, you have a bad connection somewhere. If they just dont flash, you need a new relay. They cost like $5 at Canadian Tire, and are pretty easy to come by. BuDavid Posted May 7, 2007 Share #5 Posted May 7, 2007 I would say replace the faulty relay, don't fix cheap components than can easily get damaged again. changing them will save you time and energy for the next fix..but make sure that it is a relay problem or not. choua1855 Posted May 8, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted May 8, 2007 the light don't come on at all. no light show to both side of the signal. but the hazard lights do flash to both sides. if i have bad connection, where can it be the most common location? and again where is the signal light relay located? thanks again Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/24251-turn-signal-dont-work/#findComment-208773 Share on other sites
EScanlon Posted May 8, 2007 Share #7 Posted May 8, 2007 For an early 73 look under dash behind the steering column, and look for a small cylinder that looks like a metal 35mm camera film canister with two wires attached...that is your relay. Easily obtained at your local parts store, although if you go to MSA or VB you can get one that has been matched for you.Later 73, look on the passenger side-side foot panel and you'll see several film canister type items. The one that is a cylinder resembling an aluminum can is the one you want. Take note that may/should be two right in the same area, the second one is for the Hazard flashers (yes, they are separate). However, do a simpler check first and have someone step on the brake and see if the brake lights go on or not. If they do NOT, then the wire is more upstream and into the turn signal switch. If they do, you've pretty much narrowed it down to the flasher or....the hazard switch. (Yes, this IS possible.)E Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/24251-turn-signal-dont-work/#findComment-208784 Share on other sites
choua1855 Posted May 8, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted May 8, 2007 the brake lights do light up when someone step on the brake. one more note about the turn signal, when i turn on the switch for the turn signal there is no light flash and no clicking noise, is that means i have a 100% bad relay? thanks again Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/24251-turn-signal-dont-work/#findComment-208824 Share on other sites
FairladyZS30 Posted May 8, 2007 Share #9 Posted May 8, 2007 i have the same problems...except my signals work....when the lights are off...but when i turn on the lights my signals dont go on.....might it be the relay? superfunk Posted May 8, 2007 Share #10 Posted May 8, 2007 Fairlday, I had that same problem not too long ago. Simply cleaning my connections and switch fixed it right up. If the connections are poor, there may be enough power to actuate the flasher when you headlights are off, but when they are on, your headlights might draw just enought to push it under the limit so they wont work. Now after saying that - it could also be that your relay is on its way out. I'd say to clean your connections and switch first, and if that fails to spend a couple bucks on a new relay.
