red_dog007 Posted July 21, 2007 Share #13 Posted July 21, 2007 i saw a vid of a z (buick-powered) that wailed on a bike....With a 3.8L Supercharged? That thing had to be pushing some numbers. Stock they run 240/280 for the Series II which imo is the best out of the 3. 76Datsun280z Posted July 21, 2007 Share #14 Posted July 21, 2007 You're probably talking about this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1264566096417590780&q=v8+240z&total=88&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0Any how, I wouldn't worry about, it wasn't a fair race. I say take it to the track one day to do some auto crossing and show some guys up there at the track what your car can do! Blue Meanie Posted July 21, 2007 Share #15 Posted July 21, 2007 What is it with kids thinking the Zs are Porsches? I've had that too. And to the bike thing...GOOOOOOOD LUCK! Cars and bikes don't mix. You might have had a chance if he missed a gear, but otherwise, the bike goes bye-bye. KDMatt Posted July 21, 2007 Author Share #16 Posted July 21, 2007 What is it with kids thinking the Zs are Porsches? I've had that too. And to the bike thing...GOOOOOOOD LUCK! Cars and bikes don't mix. You might have had a chance if he missed a gear, but otherwise, the bike goes bye-bye. He didn't start really pulling ahead of me until I was deep into second gear it seemed like... He also had a rolling start... lameass ... I'm still a bit sour about it... seeing as I think I managed to 'burn off' more diff fluid in this race... I don't have a 'clunk' back there which is good, but it definitely feels more 'stiff' today. Hopefully new U-joints and new fluid for the tranny and diff tomorrow. ... which reminds me... how do you folks feel about those electric 2-3 psi superchargers on Ebay? 280~Master Posted July 21, 2007 Share #18 Posted July 21, 2007 I have raced bikes in my 280 and my 300TT and have not been able to win at all. Don't worry about it just think to yourself what a stupid a$$ those guys are for thinking that your car was a slow a$$ Porsche. I wonder if you had a G-nose if they would have called your car a Jag? Darbji280z Posted August 1, 2007 Share #21 Posted August 1, 2007 I'd race it with my DeLorean...and lose miserably in hopes of wrecking that damn thing. Ugh. I too lost my first race. Of course, I raced a 350Z. At least I lost to a worthly adversary. I don't feel really bad about it... I knew I was going to lose. And what is it with the Porche thing? I've owned two porches and neither of them looked like the Z. Of course, to those unknowing sport bike kids, anything with round headlights looks the same. Except Datsuns run. . My porches were lazy and didn't like to go anywhere. hey_allen Posted August 4, 2007 Share #22 Posted August 4, 2007 ... which reminds me... how do you folks feel about those electric 2-3 psi superchargers on Ebay? A while back on one of the Isuzu boards (now closed, hmm...), someone with a bit more engineering practical experience than me ran the calculations for an electric supercharger. What it comes down to is that the little thing that fits in the intake run does nothing more than lighten your pocket. There are/were two companies that made an effective electric supercharger, but if I remember correctly, one was a roots blower, driven by a trio of starter motors, and supplied by a huge battery bank, with a run time of 15 seconds on a fully charged bank, and the other was a centrifugal, with similar restraints. The little ones that go in the intake had something like a pair of 50mm computer ventilation fans in them, and at full throttle for the little 1.8L inline 4 isuzu engine, they ended up being a restriction, and couldn't even flow enough air to keep up with the NA engine air flow. Sorry for the minor hijack, but I've always been a bit cynical about "amazing gains" power adders, and seeing the math prove it stuck in my memory. Sailor Bob Posted August 4, 2007 Share #23 Posted August 4, 2007 The term "crotch rocket" is a clue, the power to weight ratio is another good clue - in some cases less than 5:1, what is a Z's ummm 15 or 20 to 1 (depending on the car and how tricked it might be) 10:1 would be a stripped 70 with at least 200 rw hp. A Z with a supercharged LT1 can keep up with some off the shelfers, but really it's the chevy engine that's doing the work, simply pulling a Z body around. Sorry but stock Z's are not very good drag racing cars. I was talking to an old friend at a party last night and he told me about his Honda V65 (IT IS AT LEAST 20 YRS OLD) over 120 hp and around 500 pounds - I was thinking Z numbers, I didn't say them out loud though Maybe for about 10K and a couple of hundred hours of work you could get a wicked road warrior, but it is no longer a real Z.
