Alfadog Posted August 15, 2007 Share #1 Posted August 15, 2007 The Camry lasted all of about a week before I was scouring Carsales again trying to find something of interest. I have been looking for one of these for a few months now and finally found one I think I will be happy with. It's not perfect by any stretch, but it seems well cared for and it's a gorgeous colour... One of the things on my "do before I die" list was to own a convertible. I am very glad to say that I can now cross that one off!!! As a general rule I have never been a fan of convertibles as a concept but these things are so damn fun to drive. I paid a deposit on Monday, and will pick it up hopefully over the weekend. I took one for a test drive around the local hills here and was very very suprised with the performance, especially the handling. Mazda got it right with this wee beasty. Just needs a tad more power. Take the latest version for a blast if you get the chance.In fact, isn't this the car that overtook the S30 as the most sold sports car in history to date? Some 100lbs more then what you got, but with like 50hp more. I know that it is light, but at the wheels the first Miatas were under 100 for both figures.I have a buddy with a 1991 Miata and was not impressed at all. Slow all around the rev range, and even with a front sway bar the thing rolled like crazy.I wouldn't go V8 if you end up thinking about it. Going to add twice or more the weight in the front, so other things will need to be upgraded to handle the extra weight and the car is going to be front heavy too.If anything I would go with a supercharger or turbocharger on what is already there. Though I am happy that you got that at least. I hate it when car companies design a 2/4 door, and just to sell to the other market, they chop the top off and say that it is a convertible. Red_Dog, I wanted to make sure I got one of the later 1.8 litre cars. This one is a 1997 model, the last year of production. They've got a fair bit more poke. I will not be modifying the engine very much. Maybe an exhaust and CAI. I've already bought a rollbar, and suspension+wheels are next on the list. James, actually I did drive an NC last year - and on a track too! Part of a Mazda Range testing day my brother won and took me along too. Against the 3 MPS, 6 MPS, and RX-8 it was definitely the least powerful, but NOTHING felt as good as the MX-5. The way I see it, this car is as "oldschool" as you can get without actually getting an old car. It's a compromise. I don't have the time to take proper care of a real classic at this point in my life. This'll be fun, and (touch wood) won't cause me any real stress. I am still not much for the looks compared to the nearer one, but I sure do like the changes made from my buddies 1991 Miata. I am not sort of wanting to check out a earlier model to compare. The 1.8L sure does have some nicer numbers too.If you don't mind the question, how much did you drop on the car and what mileage is on it? My buddy paid $3,000 for his. Excellent condition with 170,000 miles. I am not sure how the hell the car looked so great at 170,000 miles, but it did. Though I personally think that $3k was a little much for a 91' that I am sure is less desired with 170,000 miles. ggarrard Posted August 16, 2007 Share #11 Posted August 16, 2007 We have a couple of fellows running turbocharged Miatas at our annual Lapping Day events. They regularly earn the "Iron man of the day award" for completing the most laps. On top of that that they both drive the cars to and from the track (one fellow travels 5 hours). Both are the 1.8 litre versions. This year's entertainment was watching them pass a Lotus Elise on the back straight and pull away thru the corners (driver competency).
