new to z's from Kansas

Hey everybody, my name is Chad and I am currently going to school in McPherson, KS. I recently purchased a 1981 zx 2+2, thinking it would be a fun car to work on and drive. Unfortunately, after talking to a few people, I have found that the car is not structurally sound at all. :disappoin So, I hunted around, and found a '75 for cheap which is much much more solid. :classic: So now I am parting out the '81. :disappoin Has anybody else had experiences like this? Is this the best thing to do?

Welcome aboard Chad! Regarding your Z experience.....everybody makes impulse buys, especially when young! However, you have come to join a site with loads of archived information on Z cars (specificly 240, 260 & 280). Do yourself a favor and spend some time researching the archives, there is info on just about anything you may want to know or do to your 280. Happy hunting!

Welcome aboard Chad, good to see another Kansan with an early Z. I understand (heard/read) the College is holding an open house in the car restoration department the first part of May and want some "hot rods" to show up, I plan on being there with Bonzi if so. Let me know if this is still on, I would really like to see this program.

Hey Bonzi-

Yes, we have a car show every May on the campus lawn (I don't know the exact date yet), and there are also tours of the facilities that day as well. If you want, you can schedule a tour for another day other than that of the show. People come through the building on tours quite often. How far from McPherson are you?

Chad, there are some parts on the ZX that you will not have any trouble selling. The Dist. for one. The members with 240s or 260 can use the electronic Dist on there cars. I believe the rear disk brakes are another sot after part. Actually the engine if it is in good condition and the 5 speed tranny as well. The zx block has flat top pistons and the head has value. Thanks Gary. I will definitely keep those in mind. I haven't been having the greatest luck so far just listing 'parts car', so I will have to try selling those. It looks like most stuff is reproduced. Is this true?

For those that haven't heard about McPherson College, from what I understand, it is the only 4 year College course offered in the USA dedicated to automobile restoration. Most auto makers give time, money and parts to the project along with support from the likes of Jay Leno, Barrett-Jackson, after market suppliers, an lots of others. Several years ago a class project, 55 Chevy I think, was sold at Barrett-Jackson with all procedes to the school.
