Cutlass372 Posted February 23, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2008 Hey, tomorrow im heading out to NJ to check out a 72 240z 4 speed car. The car was originally the lime green color but has been painted blue (dont know the quality of the paint job cause I haven't seen pics). There is rust in the 1/4's as well as the rockers. They said the floors were fine and the hatch, I would just need to check out the rest of the areas. I believe he said the engine was rebuilt somewhere in new jersey but im not sure how long ago. The seats are ripped and some of the gauges dont work properly. The ignition switch is broken so they have a cable hooked to the starter and tap it on the battery to start the car. The price is 1500, but I know I can talk them down to atleast 1000. I will try and snap a lot of pics when im there so you guys can tell me what you think. Hopefully they have a lift or the ground is dry enough for me to take a good look under it. What im looking for is just a nice daily driver condition car or something I can drive around while fixing up and upgrading. Based on the info so far, what do you think? I mean 1000 isn't a whole lot of money, but enough for me to not wanna waste. What would you do? mally002 Posted February 23, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2008 For 1K you can't go wrong.......Even if it's rusted out the parts alone should recoupe your investment.....maybe.Throw up some pictures when you can. Good Luck. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/27158-1972-240z/#findComment-238239 Share on other sites
DeesZ Posted February 23, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 23, 2008 Get some pictures posted and this community can give you a lot of opinions, alternatives, and information! I'm anxious to see it - there aren't many decent ones that come available in PA. Cutlass372 Posted February 24, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted February 24, 2008 http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562590375hsIsRE Here are some pictures that I took from today. Talked them down to 1000 and put down a 50 dollar deposit on it. The car looks very solid other then the rockers and part of the hatch. The floors are good, battery area is good, frame rails are nice. Had a hard time getting it started and had to use some ether. The carbs need to probably be tuned and im sure a general tune up is needed as well. The car was trapped in by other cars so I couldn't try the tranny and all that. What do you guys think? Think its worth the price? The paint is trashed, but im ok with that. I pretty much just wanna get it into driving order and daily drive it. How much do you think fixing the rockers and that hatch section would cost? I would be doing all the work myself so all I would need is the price of the patch panels. Also the seats are torn, but the rest of the interior isn't that bad. Tach was bouncing all over the place so something was up with that. It needs an ignition switch too so thats on the list as well. I can't think of much more to include, but what do you guys think? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/27158-1972-240z/#findComment-238332 Share on other sites
Z Speed Posted February 24, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 24, 2008 Elliot, IMO that car is worth every bit of 1k. I would buy that car in a heartbeat for a $1000. How is the dash. Hard to tell from your photos, but the dash look pretty decent too..... Cutlass372 Posted February 24, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted February 24, 2008 The dash is perfect, no cracks at all. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/27158-1972-240z/#findComment-238335 Share on other sites
Z Speed Posted February 24, 2008 Share #7 Posted February 24, 2008 That, in itself, is worth buying the car for. Buy it and don't look back. Make it a daily and don't part it out. It's worth fixing up.... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/27158-1972-240z/#findComment-238338 Share on other sites
Zak's Z Posted February 24, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 24, 2008 Tabco sheetmetal sells the outer rocker panels and several places carry the hatch patch panel. If you find out later theres more rust hiding and its too far gone, you can part out the interior for more than you paid or keep the stuff for a better shell. I'd buy it too. Oiluj Posted February 25, 2008 Share #11 Posted February 25, 2008 With a good dash, that looks like a great deal! At the very worst, you can sell the parts for much more than 1K. Montezuma Posted February 25, 2008 Share #12 Posted February 25, 2008 How nice to see fellow homies talking the Z hobby (Coopersburg born and raised). I like the Z for $1K; I don't think you can go wrong with that price. I would strip it down and get it back to the beautiful original yellow. I have a perfectly working ignition I took out of my 73Z which indecently came from Springtown PA. The rust is of some concern but not unusual for the east coast. If you are unable to fix it up, I am sure you can resell it for more than you paid for it. Good get, have fun with it.
