hop in car smell gas....clear a few things up

Hi, there again, lately my car has been smellin like gas bad, i did a search, and found out that the gas lines or somethignlike that is in the car at one point or something, anyways, so i figure i will replace teh lines probrally should be done anyways on this old car. Cani just call and auto part store and ask for some fuel lines, or do they have to be certain ones for this car??? Also i am smellin exaust while i drive mainly at higher speeds, but i need to get rid of this, it's not healthy and it's kinda embarassin when u have a nice arse car but it stinks to ride in it.. anyways thanks guys

A search on the forums will yield a write up or two on this very subject: replacing fuel tank vent lines.

In those posts you'll find all the info you need, but for a real quick intro, you'll need about 5' of 5/8" fuel line and about 8' of 1/2" fuel line. Make sure you use a hose rated for fuel use only!!! You can find this large size at any NAPA.

Are those dimensions ID or OD?

How did you deal with the one hose that has a severe bend? I will probably be dropping my tank this winter.

ID/OD doesn't apply to hose, they go by inside size though. When you go to the parts store and tell them you need 5 feet of 5/8" FUEL line, they know:paranoid:

I made the 180 degree bend by using a piece of tubing. Stainless steel specifically.

Get a piece of tubing about 6-8" long. I've heard not to use copper because the fuel will degrade it over time. Not sure whether it's true. Once you have the tubing, use a bender to make a "U" out of it. Then slide it in the hose.

You could just cut the hose into 2 pcs and use the tubing alone for the bend (instead of sliding it inside the hose) but that requires more hose clamps. I didn't have a tubing bender when I did mine so I used my bench vise. It turned out a little crude looking, but it worked and you'll never see again, so who cares.

You can also get a pre-bent piece of tubing that will work for the sharp bend off any 2nd generation 280zx in a wrecking yard. There are actually 2 of them in the AFM boot of each car.
