Looking for a few interior parts....

The kids car is almost together, I think he has even opened up his own Classic Zcar account and will be posting pictures shortly! I am still however looking for a couple things for the interior of his 72 240z. I need to find a auto shifter handel. We were looking at after market shifter knobs but none of them will fit...the shifter is too thick. We also need to find a rear speaker bracket. We have one but the other one was made out of wood paneling! If anyone has these parts please PM me or shoot me an email at guzinski@comcast.net.

The autoshift handle is available at the dealer. I got one about a year ago, it cost $74 and I had to wait 2 days for it to come in from the Los Angeles distribution center. It is just like the original except it does not have the chrome on the end. I think it is same as what was used on 510s, 210s etc.

IIRC, you can get a shifter from any year AT on the Z and also the 510's. That would open up your options at a Pick-N-Pull.

The rear speaker bracket (only one side is commonly available, as the car had a monaural radio) is easier to make than to try to find a "good" example of. Typically it's the RIGHT Rear bracket that people make. That's because very few cars came over with the cassette or 8-track radio, and therefore true stereo requiring two speakers. In a nutshell, a right rear speaker bracket is difficult and almost impossible to find.

Additionally, you would be forced to use a modern 5-1/4" speaker and IIRC, the size of the speaker frame on the current (modern) 5-1/4" speakers gives problems in trying to fit in to the older style OEM bracket - which were actually 5-1/8".

Then to top it all off, the size of the magnet on the speaker because of the "depth" of the speaker can be a matter of concern. On the Right hand side because of the vent hoses, on the Left hand depending on your antenna mount. This happens when you have co-axial or tri-axial speakers. They'll have a thicker and larger magnet and hence will give you fitment issues.

So, in brief, you may be better off making your own speaker brackets to hold the size speakers you want... especially if you're not using a stock radio. And if you are using a stock radio, remember it's only like 3.5 watts or so, and would be terribly underpowered for the average modern 5-1/4" speaker.

The OEM Z "T" handle is a mostly plasic handle that dries out and cracks in the sun(I went through 4 NOS ones while Driving my 280Z). I then tried the mostly metal "T" handle(has a color matched pad and button) from a 280ZX-it fits! No issues with material longevity, and usually looks good from the JY with only a cleaning.

Thanks for all the information. Someone has contacted me regarding the shifter so I hope I can get that from him. He may even have a 280zx shifter. As far as the speaker brackets, Thanks for the info on that too, I guess that explains why the one we pulled out was wood.

Look here for custom speaker brackets, however note that this location is not ideal as far as sound quality.
