And can anyone tell me why the key blanks said Nissan on them? I dont know that bit of history.

If these cant be found does anyone know if key blanks can be custom made?

Thanks

So does everyone else want the original blanks......good luck! Let us know if you find any.

Nissan is the original company name. Datsun was used for the American market mainly because it sounds less "Japanese". There are more detailed explanation on this subject, try the search function if you want more.

If your key is exactly as the one you linked to in that the grooves are in the same position as the one shown, go to a Nissan dealer and order KEY00-00055. If yours is the mirror image of that one, order KEY00-00056. They won't have the round head but they will be Nissan keys and are as close as you'll get to original without searching forever or spending a fortune. The look like this:

Hmm I guess the ignition in my Z is from another nissan (p/o said it was from a truck) they key is the right side one, and it also fits my doors (but won't lock them) guess I'll order a blank, pull out a lock, and see if I can get someone to cut the key to match the lock

I doubt that your ignition is from a truck. But, if it won't unlock the doors, it's been changed. 78s have 'right side' locks and use a single key for everything. So just take the key you have that starts the car and the locks (both doors, hatch) to the locksmith and have him set those tumblers to that key.

Speaking of, there is possibly another way to get the the key you desire, but it will be a somewhat risky venture.

A while back, I bought all the NOS 240Z parts from a South Texas dealer. Included were complete lock sets for both a 240Z & 280ZX, along with seperate door lock sets, hatch locks and glove box locks. All these came in the old style "red, white & blue" boxes and all had the original keys with them!

So here's what I'm thinking. My guess is that I don't think replacement glove box locks were an item that flew off the shelves and there could be a supply of the old stock still sitting out there just waiting to be had. See what your local dealer has and if they're out and you're feeling real gutsy, you can have them order the part and see what you get. Kinda like buying Cracker Jacks and hoping you get the De-Coder Ring! LOL

If you get lucky and get the "desired" key, then just follow sblakes instructions and you're set.

BTW... here's some pics of the keys I got with the lock sets I purchased. The first is from the 280ZX complete set and the second is from the glove box lock. Happy hunting!

That glove box lock set doesn't appear to be for a Z. At least, not a 260/280. That's a single side key like the one for my 64 L320 PU but it doesn't have a locking glove box.

It's actually the lock and key for the early series1 240Z. You'd have to have the part number for your particular model Z when ordering the lock.

There was a vendoer selling the original type on our classified section last year - not sure but I think they went for about $50 each.

They looked very good.

I don't think that deal went anywhere. I put my name down and had an e-mail or two then nothing. Think it was a member who knew a Japanese fellow who could get him the keys in a group purchase. At least that's the story I remember.

I want a few round "N" keys myself and don't mind paying $30-$50 ea.
