1970's original Key Blank(oval top)

I'm not a good expert at this period of key, but let me be a prick and comment that the title of this thread is a little misleading in that all of our cars are "1970's".

Her Majesty sports an ignition key like the ones on the right. The N oval head key concides with later cars. There are two versions of series one ignition keys as the ignition lock systems date to the Fairlady roadster. I bought a new ignition in 1986 to replace the worn out one in 26th and it came with the oval head key on the left. It seems to match the blanks. Arne, you mentioned an opposite hand groove and I would like to see a key like that. A good picture for the collection, please.

Back when I bought my blank keys, an N oval head key was between $20 and $30. I sold mine for $20.

Chris, I think you are referring to the WASO and VOSS keys, but I'm pretty sure only the shorter VOSS keys were used in the 240z export cars (at least in North America). I believe WASO keys were used in some home market Fairlady Z's (in addition to the roadsters that you mentioned).

I'll say nothing more about this after this statement, I promise. Subterfuge is subterfuge. eBay is full of people that play games with their product descriptions, etc., just to make a buck. I really wouldn't expect that type of attitude from a member of this club but my expectations don't really matter here. I've given away stuff or sold it for the cost of postage and my effort to go to the P.O., U.P.S., etc. Parts that other might have tried to make a profit on. I purchase very little with thought of what it might or might not be worth down the road. What something is worth varies from person to person. For me, worth is not just a dollar and cents issue. What I have to go through to get something also factors in. If I sense something unethical about the deal, I don't care how much it's 'worth', I'll look elsewhere. That's just me and I'm not in the market for those key blanks anyway. JMO.

Well, I'm speechless.....

I don't know what kind of response you expected, but my advice would be to put the key blanks up on eBay and get whatever cash you think you deserve for them. I don't want your key blanks, I have no use for your key blanks. I have my original set of keys.

But quite frankly, I'm disappointed that a member of the club would use chicanery in an attempt to get information, and I'm shocked that the same member would then make the statement above to fellow club members.

Maybe I expect too much of a fellow Z driver, but to me this club is about friendship, camaraderie, and shared interest...not about cashing in on fellow club members. Wow.

To some this is a market, not a club, to some it is a club and a market, and to some it is only a club-there is plenty of room for all three kinds-as long as they don't pretend to be any kind other than what they are...

It is the pretending that that ticks people off. Selling something to a friend isn't wrong, But giving the friend the question "How much would you give me for it?" is certainly more out in the open than what has gone on in this thread... Friends don't take advantage of friends...

Thanks for the pics, Mike! Geeze..and I thought I knew a lot about the keys. You have a great collection. I WAS talking about the WASO and VOSS keys. And I have seen both from American Zs. 26th has the shorter bayonet type and I don't remember what's in 27th. I'll have to go look. Jim Frederick had a couple of cars with the longer bayonet type. I remember this from comparing keys when he was so pissed that I found the blanks!

And for what it's worth...ya'll kimb down off surfsnake's back. He's been caught with his fly open and that's enough.

Chris, this techinical service bulletin was posted by Carl in the same thread I linked to before. It discusses the differences between the longer (WASO) ignition keys and the shorter (VOSS) keys. It indicates that VOSS keys were used starting with HLS30-00001, so no WASO keys were ever used on US 240Zs. If Jim's cars were HLS30's maybe they had the ignitions replaced at some point? HLS30-00032 has its original keys and it has a VOSS ignition key. However, as we have seen sometimes the early cars did wind up with parts they weren't supposed to, so I guess anything is possible.

Looks pretty silly to me to advertise NOS OEM parts at an obscene premium to a market that is all about modifications...but, I guess when you completely alienate the primary market for your investment...

As pointed out earlier, Fortunately an original key blank is a want a not a need, the cars will run without them, and anyone into the cars will identify the keys made from these blanks as non original replacements anyway. So waiting for a better price, or an indistinguishable reproduction that comes cut (not ground) and stamped with original Nissan tooling at a 1/3rd the price should just about kill the marketability of those anyway-better sell them quick!

Having something isn't nearly as important as having a market for it...
