ChrisZ Posted December 12, 2008 Share #1 Posted December 12, 2008 (edited) Hi all I'm out looking after pistons for my L24, i have sourced down a supplier with very interesting prices, they have 2 kind of flat tops, the one with valve relief's and the other without. The seller say that the one without (Ry 2516) is for 70 - 72 and the one with relief's (RY 6335) is for 73. My car is a 73, still i prefere pistons without relisf's The only thing i can think could be the reason for the pistons having relief's is due to larger valves in the E88. My question is, will the one without relief's work ? motor is bone stock, except of round top SU's and header, any input is appreciated. d240zx2 Posted December 13, 2008 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2008 I'm no expert on this, but it seems that if you're running a stock head with stock block, the reliefs are there for a reason. My flat-tops (70) have owner-induced "reliefs" imprinted due to a bad cam install I did years ago. I'd hate to think you'd do the same thing from a different source....Frank Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/30237-flat-top-pistons/#findComment-268825 Share on other sites

Unkle Posted December 13, 2008 Share #4 Posted December 13, 2008 Be sure your deck / heads are not machined for sure , even changing a blown head gasket by a previous owner could scuttle your plans!:surprised Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/30237-flat-top-pistons/#findComment-268843 Share on other sites
ChrisZ Posted December 13, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted December 13, 2008 Deck is surfaced, but did Datsun ever come with relief's ? I once heard that the relief's dont even match up with the valves, to me they are just less compression and more chance of detonation. Dave a set is with pins and rings, price is $180 - 200 depending on model, http://www.coolparts.com/index.php?p=catalog&mode=search&search_in=all&search_str=ry+2516&x=0&y=0 you can look it up. The car use to have reliefs in pistons, i just like to know if it is necessary or not. Chris Btw, Dave there is a thread about LED lights going on at HybridZ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/30237-flat-top-pistons/#findComment-268858 Share on other sites
