I ripped mine out and canned it, too. It was so awful looking that I prefer the holes in the center console (from the AC control panel screws) over the unit.

I believe I would get the rust resolved first and get that cancer stopped as soon as possible. The engine can not hurt the balance of the car were "rust never sleeps". FWIW
