Stereo Replacement

So I am ready to replace the original stereo in my 72 240Z. (It will go into a box for now) I'm looking for options. I have seen the retro-sound from MSA. I am interested to see if anyone has found other options that fit/adapt without butchering the face/console. Thoughts? Thank you.

FWIW, I was able to install the retro-sound stereo in my 260z without any modifications to any part of the console. Granted, my console is not the same as a 240 so your experience may be different. Installation is unbelievably flexible, the problem is there is such an incredible amount of flexibility that it takes awhile to come up with the best solution... At least it did for me.

I made the faceplate by modifying a square one that was included in the kit. It actually looks better than the picture, but you get the idea.

Leave your 72 console original............I just purchased a RetroOne and leaving my original Hitachi in place. This (Second System) will go in the glove box with a complete face plate with a total stand alone system. When you look into my car it will look stock. I have purchased the MSA speaker box for the back. I just ordered speakers yesterday and still have to order a hidden antenna and then I will begin the installation.

I am planning on keeping the orignal and refuse to cut wires or the original facepiece, that way I can easily bring it back, as needed. I have done the glovebox stereo before and don't care for the lack of storage space during tours and TSD rallys.

I mounted a new remote controlled sterio under the drivers seat- changing cds is a little exciting, but with the remote(and a piece of clear tubing placed with one end on the IR receiver of the head unit and the other just inside the center vent(everything else out of sight), the only give aways are great sound and a remote in the console.

I'm looking for a remote mounted radio tuner/mp3 player with bluetooth that I could mount under the seat and keep my stock radio in place. I want to play the mp3's from my phone. If I find something I'll let you know.

Well I just ripped all the wires out of my vintage JVC that came with my car, and I am looking for a replacement. I will have to look at the MSA vintage sound one.

As another option check with Crutchfiled. Seems they had several retro sound options and may have some remote options also.

The difficult part is the faceplate - fitting their universal plate so it allows use of the antenna switch is what keeps me from jumping in. Hacking my original face plate is not a viable/reversible option.

I don't have a retro system, but did replace my AM with a vintage Pioneer unit. Since there was no way to deal with the antenna switch with mine, I replaced the antenna with a similar full auto unit triggered by the antenna lead on the Pioneer. I've got the original antenna packed away with the original radio.

Boy, I wish I was still in your position. An idiot PO hacked the hell out my face plate at some point. It's a real mess, and he partially cut the bottom edge even though I know he meant to just widen the opening to fit a standard head unit. I don't know what he was thinking.

I've often thought about making a replacement panel on the mill out of aluminum, but there's no way it would resemble the original piece well enough to suit my tastes.

That's what I did years ago when I upgraded the radio on my '63 Avanti, rather than hack the original face plate. I did a marginal job, but it serves the purpose. I also upgraded with the automatic antenna as Arne mentioned above. I think I'll keep looking for a "cleaner" faceplate solution for the Z.
