gstoib Posted October 15, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 15, 2009 What would cause the cable from the battery to the starter to smoke at the starter end ('73 240Z)? It has a new battery, but a weak alternator that will soon be replaced.Gary Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33541-starter-cable-smoke/ Share on other sites
Zs-ondabrain Posted October 15, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 15, 2009 replace it with a heavier gauge wire, like 4 gauge and make sure all connections are clean and tight. Also, make sure your ground cable gets updated as well. All ground points should be clean and tight and abundant. (the ring terminal above the harness near the starter, the cable from the negative post to the firewall)Make sure the alternators power wire is clean and tight as well. There is a ground wire at the alternator, clean the terminal and tighten it.The key to a good electrical system starts at the battery, then the cables, then the connections. Your Z will thank you.Dave Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33541-starter-cable-smoke/#findComment-297575 Share on other sites
