g9m3c Posted October 26, 2009 Share #13 Posted October 26, 2009 I forgot to add the bit about buying new bolts. The other guys have me covered here though. Definitely get the new bolt kit from MSA. It costs, what, 5 bucks? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33647-now-what-can-go-wrong/?page=2#findComment-298584 Share on other sites
Pomorza Posted October 26, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted October 26, 2009 Do have a question for you all. I ordered the pump and bolts and its on its way. Upon installation is an RTV required on the pump. I haven't yet looked at the FSM or other books about the car but I'm wondering what you guys have done. From what it looks like my pump has a crap ton of red RTV holding it on the block. Not sure if there is even a gasket there. Advise is appreciated. g9m3c Posted October 26, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 26, 2009 Yea, there is a gasket. I used a thin layer of RTV on both sides of mine and no leaks so far. motorman7 Posted October 26, 2009 Share #16 Posted October 26, 2009 I personally prefer a thin film of silicon on the gasket, both sides. Too much and I dont think you get even pressure on the gasket when torquing. No RTV and the inconsistencies of the metal (warp, pits) may lead to small leaks. ZCurves Posted November 3, 2009 Share #17 Posted November 3, 2009 I had to chime in...I have pretty much done all of that with my Z over the last 25 years. One thing everyone should check/change when doing a water pump replacement are the little Belt Tensioner Bearings. They are around $10 ea and will quiet your engine alot! They are the source of many 'mystery' noises. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33647-now-what-can-go-wrong/?page=2#findComment-299337 Share on other sites
sblake01 Posted November 3, 2009 Share #18 Posted November 3, 2009 If you're talking about idler pulley bearings, you'd only need to check/change them if your car had them. Those would only be on the ones that have AC. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33647-now-what-can-go-wrong/?page=2#findComment-299338 Share on other sites
Pomorza Posted November 3, 2009 Author Share #19 Posted November 3, 2009 sblake01 I took my A/C belt off months ago as I don't use it at all. It was most definitely the water pump as I took it off and found the bearing burned. (I disassembled the pump...had some free time). There was also a stream of coolant coming from the weep hole on the old pump. Had a nice adventure putting the new one in.
