Nigel Mulvey Posted October 31, 2002 Share #40 Posted October 31, 2002 Pronunciation is one thing but what intrigues me are the different meanings words have in different English speaking countries. For example, some years ago I was working with a team from the US Secret Service preparing for a visit by President Clinton. It had been a long day and I was desparate for a cigarette so I told the agent I was with that I was just going out to "smoke a fag". 1 Bravo 6 Posted October 31, 2002 Share #41 Posted October 31, 2002 YOU BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT< I LOVE IT< I LOVE IT. THIS IS FUN,FUN,FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey Nigel, you failed to tell us the agent's reaction to your "Smoking a FAG". It has been my experience that the main things septic tanks cannot understand about Australians is our weird sense of humour and our love of stirring things up. We'll stir the pot over the smallest of things, such as ZEE or ZED. (We ARE right of course). MY FELLOW AUSSIES!!!!!! What do you say we REALLY confuse our northern hemisphere brothers??????????????????????. Let's talk STRINE!!!!!!!!!!! Well, it's time for me to grab me tit for tat, don me bag of fruit and hit the frog and toad. :stupid: :stupid: Rick. 1 Bravo 6 Posted October 31, 2002 Share #43 Posted October 31, 2002 No, DAZZA old mate, I'm afraid your'e wrong. As I said in an earlier post, they pronounce it ZEE because it's easier to remember rhymes. Such as, a b c d e f G h I j k l m n o P q r s t u V w x y and ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Can't you just imagine how mixed up they'd BEEEEEEEEEEE If they had to pronounce it ZED not ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Rick. Nigel Mulvey Posted October 31, 2002 Share #45 Posted October 31, 2002 Have to 'fess up Rick, I'm actually a Pom so a little less of that Northern Hemisphere bit 'eh. Came to Australia (pronounced Orstralia ) in '89. The Kiwi's haven't copped any yet - ever asked one to say "Tim Finn put six tins of wizz in a chilly bin"? Go on, try it. And anyway there's no such thing as an Australian, they're just Poms that got here before I did. :stupid: Let's have a bit of fun, but remember, we may have our aural difference but we are united in our passion for our cars and any one of you will always be welcome to drop by for a beer or ten. Alfadog Posted November 1, 2002 Share #46 Posted November 1, 2002 I've got a story about a Scottish nurse at a hospital I will share with you. And it's true! A patient (we'll call her Mrs. Wicker for the story) in was very sick in the Hospital because of some sort of bladder problem where she couldn't urinate very well or something (sorry I'm no doctor as you can see!). Anyway, the nurse took care of her for a long time and this one doctor regularily saw her. Anyway, one day as the doctor was coming in the nurse took the doctor to the side and told the doctor, "Mrs. Wicker passed a wee!" "Well that's fantastic", the doctor said with real enthusiasm The nurse was utterly shocked - "She just died and youre happy?!?!" The doctor was my mum ROFL Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/3380-im-new-what-does-zed-mean/?page=4#findComment-18004 Share on other sites
1 Bravo 6 Posted November 1, 2002 Share #47 Posted November 1, 2002 Alfadog, I just can't help wondering if your mum knows that her slight misunderstanding of the nurse's message has now been broadcast worldwide. NIGEL!!!!!!!!, I'm still perched on the edge of my seat wondering what the agents reaction was. tEm fEnn put sEx tEns of pEss En a chElly bEn. GOOD GRIEF!!!!! Looks like something from the pen of a science fiction writer. You're dead right about us all loving our ZEDS (couldn't resist that ) mate, puts us all on common ground. Any of you blokes ever get up to my neck of the woods, I don't drink but the coffee pot's always on. Rick.
