mbarjbar Posted November 27, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 27, 2009 The instruction sheet for my polyurethane bushings, for the mustache bar, says to reuse the original shell. What is the shell? Is this part of the original bushing? Thanks, Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33957-poly-mustache-bar-bushings/ Share on other sites
ezzzzzzz Posted November 27, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 27, 2009 Drill, hammer, burn out the rubber insert and inner metal tube. The outer steel shell is what is left behind (besides the actual mustache bar). The poly inserts go into those outer shells. Replacing the bushings with originsl pieces would require removal of those outer shells too. Zs-ondabrain Posted November 27, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 27, 2009 (edited) Only remove the rubber. There is no steel insert in the mustache bar, unless you're talking about the steel tube that the bolt goes thru. I drilled and burnt out the rubber, cleaned the remainder with acetone then POR15'd the full mustache bar and the round end peices in the mustach bar. mbarjbar Posted November 27, 2009 Author Share #4 Posted November 27, 2009 So the original bushings have the metal 'shell' around the outside of the rubber. They are then pressed in. Apparently, the shells don't come out easily, so it is easier to reuse them. Probably not a good idea to be too rough on the inner surface. Thanks, Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33957-poly-mustache-bar-bushings/#findComment-301525 Share on other sites
Darrel Posted November 27, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 27, 2009 There is a metal sleeve in the mustache bar. On a stock rubber bushing, the sleeve is hammered down to fit over the mustache bar. The eurathane bushings for the mustache bar are made so you can keep the sleeve. No metal cutting required. Just remove the metal tube (suspended by rubber) then remove the rubber. The Poly bushing will slide into the metal sleeve that ir "Mushroomed" to the Mustache bar.Dave Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33957-poly-mustache-bar-bushings/#findComment-301527 Share on other sites

mbarjbar Posted November 30, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted November 30, 2009 Scott,It would be great to document, with photos, your change to original rubber. Was I correct in assuming the original bushing has the metal shell surrounding the rubber? If true, you will have to remove the old shell.Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33957-poly-mustache-bar-bushings/#findComment-301690 Share on other sites
tlorber Posted November 30, 2009 Share #9 Posted November 30, 2009 Does anyone know if these are available in a softer durometer urethane? That could be a good compromise between the harder ones and the rubber.
