Miles Posted March 19, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2010 (edited) I am reassembling my 72 240Z after painting it (350Z silver alloy). For the paint job I removed the front turn signal housings, marker lights and harnesses and also removed the rear marker lights, brake/tail light assemblies and harnesses at the connectors. All harnesses were marked with tape and identified as for right left etc. Hot wires were marked on each marker light.I reinstalled the front turn signal/parking lights, all of the marker lights and the brake/tail light assemblies carefully matching the harness connectors.Problem: the right turn signals and the right rear marker light don't work. All other lights work. The L & R green turn signal indicators work. The right indicator is brighter than the left indicator, but they both flash.Any help is appreciatedMiles Edited March 19, 2010 by Miles Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/35101-right-turn-signals-and-right-rear-marker-light-not-working/ Share on other sites
Miles Posted June 23, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted June 23, 2010 Fixed RR marker light.Right front and right rear turn signals (TS) do not come on.Right front TS does not flash when hazard switch is on. All other lights flash.Green turn indicators on tach flash for right and left turns and when the hazard switch is on. Right indicator is brighter than the left indicator-always been that way.Brake lights work.Oposite brake lights come on appropriately when the TS switch is engaged for right or left turns. So the TS switch is working as for brake function.Questions about TS switch check out:-Should there be voltage at Green/Black wire (R. Front TS) when TS switch is in right turn mode?-Should there be voltage at White/Black wire (R.Rear TS) when TS switch is in right turn mode?ThanksMiles Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/35101-right-turn-signals-and-right-rear-marker-light-not-working/#findComment-323405 Share on other sites
lbpdz Posted June 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 23, 2010 looks like you are getting there. How bad is the corrosion in the light sockets and fuse block?I have been bit by the corrosion bug before that caused me all manners of these types of issues. Zs-ondabrain Posted June 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Sounds more like a bulb or connection issue in the front, rather than a switch issue. The RR and RF turn signal are connected together inside the TS switch when you activate the Right turn signal. So if you're activating a right turn via the switch, both RR and RF (green/black and white/Red) should show the same voltage and signal (+) I've attached a few pictures of the Inside of a Turn signal switch. As it sits in the pictures, you'll see what contact goe to what corner of the car. When you activate the turn signal, the brake light contact disconnects from the rear contact, so the t/s can go thru that same contact and blink with the front light of the same side. The first picture was written on for another customer, who had no rear turn signal but everything else worked fine. He rebent the tab correctly and all was good. let me know if this helps and if you need the switch needs to be rebuilt. It's what I do. Miles Posted June 23, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted June 23, 2010 When I tore the car down for paint I took all of the light housings apart and cleaned the lenses and the light sockets. I may have messed up the front socket.Dave. On the TS switch, is the right rear WB or WR. I have been squinting at my Haines schematic for hours. Also, there is a single green wire on the TS switch that I can not find on my schematic. Any idea what the green wire is for?ThanksMiles Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/35101-right-turn-signals-and-right-rear-marker-light-not-working/#findComment-323414 Share on other sites
Zs-ondabrain Posted June 23, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 23, 2010 The right side wires are Green/black for the front right and white/red for the rear. The left side wires are green/red for the front left and white/black for the rear.Your diagram doesn't usually show the switch wires, but usually shows the wires up to that connection. The Green wire (center of the turn signal switch = Flasher) connects to a WHITE wire that goes directly to the flasher under the dash. You should be able to find the white wire on the diagram and the other wire on the flasher module is green. That green wire on the T/S flasher goes to the hazard switch and then to the fusebox.Hope that helps.Dave Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/35101-right-turn-signals-and-right-rear-marker-light-not-working/#findComment-323415 Share on other sites
Miles Posted June 25, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted June 25, 2010 (edited) Solved the problem. There was no power at the red and white wire on the TS switch. So I took the switch apart and cleaned all of the contacts. Both rear TS now work. For the right front I knew I had power at the turn signal switch. So I pulled the RF TS/Parking light harness connector apart and pushed it back together firmly. The RF TS now works. Thanks for your helpMiles Edited June 25, 2010 by Miles spelling Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/35101-right-turn-signals-and-right-rear-marker-light-not-working/#findComment-323642 Share on other sites

DavidB Posted July 2, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 2, 2010 Had a similar problem: Rt rear signal not working. Used your comments and photo, removed turn signal assembly, cleaned the contacts, and rebent the tabs..works great. Thanks for help! Zs-ondabrain Posted July 2, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 2, 2010 When rebuilding switches for people, I run into this issue more often than not. I don't know why it's mainly the Right side and more often the rear than the front.Use only a dab of Dielectric grease on the area that the ball bearing slides on. If you use a different lube, it'll likely heat up and move onto the contacts, causing them to fail or smoke the grease. The dielectric grease will allow it to continue to work without issues.Glad it worked for ya. Be careful when bending tabs on the switch box, as they don't like to be bent too much or too often. They Will break after repeated bending and then I'll have to sell you another box.Dave Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/35101-right-turn-signals-and-right-rear-marker-light-not-working/#findComment-324302 Share on other sites
