Windshield removal -- ?

So here is what I have completed so far...

The windshield still has not come loose, but I am confident that if I keep trimming the edge back to expose the edge of the glass I will have success.

Here is a picture showing how I have cut away to expose the edge of the glass. Let me know if this is what you were describing (it is how understood it).

MSA has the windshield weatherstripping for 49.95. I;d cut it completely out of the car and plan on replacing it. Leaking windshields create rust. One of the 280 2+2 's I had developed a rust spot behind the dash from a leaky windshield. It rotted a hole about 3 inches in diameter.

I've had to work on my windshield to get it out once the cuts were made also. Just keep slicing to make sure it is completely clear. You may have some old glue stuck from a PO or the rubber just grabs hold of the glass. Come in from behind with a single edge razor blade to release the back side. Be careful is all I can say :classic:

By doing a precise silicone glue and fillet job, you can be assured of a weather proof seal. I always take the cut rubber out and place a bead of black silicone on the metal side before reinstalling it. This makes sure no water can get in there. My cars have always been outsiders and I have never had a problem with the windshield leaking.

While I agree that if you had a street car, buying new rubber would be the correct thing to do but on a race car, the $49 could be put to use on a performance enhancing extra.

I'm not discounting your post -- you always have some great things to pass on -- I'm just looking at things from a no-budget race angle.

busted it....

I now have a slight crack stemming up from where I have the picture above...

SO is it legal with a small (>4 inch) crack in the drivers' sidce corner? This suxx so bad -- all so I could paint the darn cage.

Ne1 have a spare windshield they will sell really _cheap_? Boy am I not happy with myself on this one.

I was working at the lower corner as you were saying above and then tried to pry from the top (it looked like it had looesned) and that was it -- nice crack noise and now I guess I am looking for a windsheild.

I have one on my parts car, but it also has a rock chip and a slight crack in it...

That bites -- been there.

It is usually up to the scrutineer on the legality of it. I think as long as it doesn't interfere with your vision they may let it go. Worst case is that they mark it in your log and tell you that you have to change it.

The GCR doesnt say we can do plexi -- dang this bites... If it doesnt _say_ you can...

if I remember correctly, do auto glass places have a procedure or sell the material for either fixing small cracks in windshields, or have the ability to fill in chips??

You can fill in a bulls eye fracture and a rock chip if they aren't too big. A fracture that has already radiated is a done deal. And don't feel too bad PHI, as it truely doesn't suck untill you break one that you are putting back in...
