I want to have a car alarm installed in my 260z (my last 260 was stolen/totaled-it broke my heart). I've read you can have electrical problems when car alarms are installed in vintage cars. Just wondering what type is the best route to go with an original 260 and what you have installed in your cars??? Thankz

I can't think of any real good reason for a car alarm to cause problems with a vintage car unless the installer is the problem. They really don't require squat for power so its not like they will overload any of the factory wiring.

I have always ran hornet/viper alarms and had good luck with them.

If you have an electric fuel pump, you can put a kill switch in line. The thief may get a couple of blocks before he burns the fuel out of the bowls but that's about it.

You can also put a kill switch in line for the dizzy ignitor wire (I did this on my roadster).

I do like the trunk monkey though.

Any Python, Viper, Sidewinder (All DEI Products) will serve your needs. All have low to decent price, do their job well, very little draw on the battery, and have accesory outputs. You can do it your self.....

Black goes to ground

Red goes to the battery

Green to the door pins

Yellow to the ignition wire

Orange to the Relay as well as the yellow, The starter wire is Cut, wired into the relay and the alarm will disconnect the starter wire when armed or when the alarm sounds.

Blue is an instant alarm wire with a negative input. Connect this wire to a Hood pin and or Hatch pin.

The alarms have both options for Built in Shock Sensor or remote Shock Sensor (attach it to the steering column and plug in the wires to the alarm, easy)

The white wire goes into a relay (Unless you have MY Parking light upgrade harness) to power the parking lights. Instructions tell how to do it. If you have my PLH, just tap the small black wire to the relay and make sure the Parking light output of the alarm is switched to a Positive output.

Almost all of these alarms have a Grey?? Second channel output which is activated by Holding down the Unlock button on the remote (Keyfog) to activate dome lights, horns, Hatch pop, etc.

The Orange wire of the alarm is also used as "Ground when armed" wire. Connect this wire to a relay that cuts the power wire of the fuel pump, or Distributor, or other anti theft accesories.

Hope this helps a little and lets you know that it's a simple job, you can do it yourself and know that if anyone steals your Z, it's because they had a flatbed or tow truck, cause they ain't driving away with your Z.

That was great. I would've loved to see that happen to the a__hole that stole and wrecked my last z. Then he had the balls to write and call from prison asking me to return a ring he left in the car (which I never found)Couldn't believe it.

Once again guys thanks for the suggestions. This forum is a great source of information. Back in the day I installed a couple of stereos and speakers so I should be able to save some $ and do put the alarm in myself.

FYI-When I called around auto parts stores for filters, a couple of times I had to spell Datsun cause they never heard of them before :rolleyes:

That trunk monkey is simply bad arse. If I remember there's this car alarm (which isn't really an alarm) it was on the show 'effin science and you can turn it on and off buy remote but while it's on and someone enters your car it sets off a sonic pitch that'll blow your ear drums if you listen to it too long so that could work haha.

I installed a Viper 1002 today. I picked up a refurbished unit for $57 from Amazon. The refurbished unit did not come with any directions but with Dave

s writeup and a little Googe everything installed without a glitch and works great. Thanks for the writeup Dave!
