Removing Mirror => removing glass

Recommended Posts

Hey

I recently installed new fender mirrors, and had to remove the mirror on the drivers side. Got those mirrors from a guy in NY ^^

However, it seems that perticular bolt is very hard to get to, and will probably need removing the glass itself. heres what im talking about:

I can see that the glass itself is hooked onto 2 "hinges"

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz51/H3nrY_/Datsun%20260Z/P1000682_1.jpg

And those are connected to 2 "slide axes"

http://i813.photobucket.com/albums/zz51/H3nrY_/Datsun%20260Z/P1000686_1.jpg

But how to removed those axes? In my book itself (Haynes), to just unscrew the bolts, and then you can slide it away underneath. I have tries this, but it gets stuck and i barely have enough room to get the slide ax to the bottom. I cant get the roller attached to the window out of the slide ax.

this is a right picture of the door :

and a bit more to the left:

If anyone can help me, please do. Sorry for the bad english terms, I am from Belgium :o

Bon Soir Hendrik.

Je parle français un peut, mais pas bien pour me fair compris.

It is not necessary to disassemble the door completely. You can either a) remove the glass or B) roll the glass all the way up and then carefully put your hand on the nut to remove it.

The last two pictures you listed P1000683 AND 684 show the front and rear part of the door but not the center part of the door. From those pictures I can see that you have part of the window crank mechanism removed (there are two screws missing from around the crank handle) which is NOT necessary, and will cause problems with removing the glass.

To remove the glass, there is a SLIDE (similar to what you refer to as an axe, but called a Guide Channel) in the CENTER part of the door for one of the LEGS of the SCISSOR LIFT mechanism. Remove that slide from the door, which will allow you to tilt the glass and then slide it out of the door. You may also want to remove the FRONT "Axe" (Sash) to release the nylon guide at the front of the window glass. My Haynes book describes the procedure in section 12.11, page 201. I do not know if the version you are using is in French and therefore on a different page number.

Alternatively, you can raise the window all the way to the top, AFTER replacing all the screws you've removed so far. Then carefully work your way in there to remove the mirror. If it's the standard mirror bolt it's probably a 10mm wrench/ socket you will need.

Hopefully, this makes sense and it helps you.

Hey Escanlon

Merci de repondre en francais, je sais que c´est pas facile :)

By the way, I speak dutch, french is our second language.

I have´t removed the crank mechanism yet, I just removed those two screws in the hope of solving the problem, but it didn´t.

Well. in the haynes it said to first remove the front axle, which is the right one. The way you say it, to remove the guide channel in the middle first seems more logical. I´ll take another picture of the entire door itself. if possible, can you point out on the picture where I need to remove ?

I must say that the layout of the door is a tad different than the layout in the Haynes.

The two bolts circled hold the GUIDE CHANNEL to the door frame.

Removing those will allow you to remove the glass from the door and then have access to the mirror bolt.

Here's a link to the Factory Service Manual for a 74 260 (the only year the US had the 260), but it should help you find Nissan's instructions on removing the door glass.

(The link will download a file.)

However, the diagrams for the door are the same as for the 240 (Section BF).

This link will download the 1979 280ZX Factory Service Manual, and Section BF page BF-11 shows a door panel more like yours. This one may prove to be a better help to you:

Hope this helps;

A bientôt

Enrique
