Hi maybe someone can help me. I have a 77 280z with a 4 speed. The local pick a part is having a half off sale this weekend and I am planning on getting a five speed out of an 82 zx. what parts beside the trans do I need to get off the parts car for the swap?

Pretty much just the transmission.

If you search for "5 speed conversion" you can get more detailed information.

Your existing clutch will work, but the throw-out bearing and sleeve need to match the clutch, not the transmission, so unless you are buying a new clutch, use the ones from your 4 - speed.

Having been down this road by the way, this would be an excellent time to run past your local Nissan dealer and get new clutch parts. I had to drop the transmission back out and replace the clutch a couple of years after swapping the transmission. That was a waste of effort.

What I recommend you is:

1. Replace engine rear main seal while you are already there.

(remove the flywheel and it is there!)

2. Replace both front and rear seal of your new transmission.

(front has cover inside the bell housing and MSA(Motosoports) always has gasket and seal in stock!)

3. Replace throw-bearing and clucth (very cheap!) I recommend "Exidy" brand because it is one of the band name for "Daiken" which makes parts for NIssan, Toyota, and Honda.

4. Replace transmission mount and bushing shown in the picture here.

5. Cluch slave is already mentioned by others.

Good luck!:)

Since you are going from a 4 speed to a 5 speed you would probably want to get a differential with a better gear ratio. I think the 82ZX would have an R200 with a 3.90 ratio that would be a direct swap into your 280Z, so you should pick that up too. If that is not correct someone let me know.
