Two plug and play tach's...no movement

Recommended Posts

After finally getting my tach out of the dash and replacing (but not installed yet) with a working replacement it still has no movement.

Two years ago I started the restoration of my 1970 240Z, and several weeks ago noticed the tach wasn't working. The mechanic who had been working on the car is gone (along with all my manuals) but before he left installed the Pertronix EI.

After looking at the wiring (which I have no idea if correct, but it looked like nothing was un-plugged) I just assumed the tach was broken and got a replacement. I simply plugged it in and tested but it doesn't register anything, no jumping, no movement, nothing.

Now I'm thinking its got to be a wire or some other connection but really have no clue. With out any books or diagrams I can't be sure if its even wired correct. Here is a picture of the coil and tach, does anything seem a miss...........Is there a way to test the tach without damaging it on a battery or some other way. Thanks for any help for a wiring / mechanically challenged fella.

If you still have the resistor in place, swap the Black/White wire going to it with the B/W wire going to the coil.

If the resistor is gone, you have one loose wire, another B/W wire near by that needs to be in the circuitry for the Tach to receive a signal.
