Since I have a 314hp NA L28 it's not hard for me to figure out the cost and it runs on 93 pump gas (but likes 100 better). Telling you the cost is a whole 'nother matter since you could be my wife using a fake ID to get it out of me.

Z-Ya is prepping an L28 race engine with just under 12:1 compression ratio, all the good (and $$$) internals, the spare set of refreshed Solex carbs from the BSR 240 and the works head from that car as well. Hoping for 250rwhp and I'm guessing we will have nearly $8k in it plus all of his time to assemble it (the parts alone are likely to be worth twice that but we got them in a package deal).

Seems there should be a "sticky" on - "So you want to know the cost of a 250hp plus NA motor build" using posts from the hundreds of replies to similar questions.

now lets talk just the common mods for it exhaust, light head work, bigger TB, yoou know just the basics, i already have a ignition for it its a MSD not sure what modle it is but that all came form the last owner. i do have a set of rewinds if some one wants to buy them i dont really like them. no tires just the rims.

If you want to know how to tweak every bit of power from your L24-L26-L28 call Dave - you can go mild to wild!! He is a super knowledgeable guy and will share his opinion on how to get what you want out of your engine.

Of course nothing is cheap (especially performance!!)

I run a Rebello motor and am very pleased with Daves work. Call him and have a talk. For 300, I'm guessing about 10 grand by the time its done. By the way, I hate text style shorthand. I prefer actually capitalizing the first word of a sentence and proper spelling, etc,. Just me.

Im getting ready to build an engine for my z with the help of a friend who has several z's with modified engines. From what I guess, I MIGHT get 175HP and spend 3 to 4 grand in the end. Im going with triple webers and that will be alot of the cost. I would say 300 HP will be hard to obtain for an average wallet like mine. Just my opinion.

Ill have to get a hold of dave i guess to know what im looking at i wanna spend at least 3-4 and get as much power as i can. (if some one could give me a email that would be better for the time diffrence of where im at plus all the unknowns here)because I need to find witch head would be better for power to. I have a N47 on the car and 2 E88 that came with it not sure witch would be better in the long run. Hey thanks for all the good advice I really am thankful that there are people that will help a nubie in the z wrold but i can already tell that i picked the right car with a strong community.

I agree about the caps and spelling...also just my opinion. FWIW

On the engine you want...I'm in a similar situation with my wants vs. my cash on hand. I found that DatsunSpirit.com has a very high HP engine build available...well over 300HP for around $7k. Want even more power, I believe the next step up is $10-12k.

To push 250HP you are looking at a bored and stroked engine with head work, a cam, and triple carbs (Mikuni, Webber, OER, Solex, etc). As a point of reference the carb setup will run you around $1500 alone, maybe more as it's been a few years since I bought mine (personally I'd consider contacting Todd at Wolf Creek Racing for them...that's where mine came from and he's great to work with).

Dave over at Rebello is a great guy to work with also from what everyone has said. I have talked with Dave and Eiji at Datsun Spirit about what I want and have to save more coin before making that jump.

Just to add to the mix I've also heard good things about Sun Belt (http://www.kssmotorsports.com/sunbelt/about_us.aspx), they are in Atlanta as I recall. Rebello (http://www.rebelloracing.com/) is in Cali, and Datsun Spirit (http://www.datsunspirit.com/) in in VA.

Everyone will jump at the opportunity to tell you cheaper ways to make the power you are looking for including doing a V8 swap, going turbo, etc. Ultimately it's your decision. Do you research and make then decide what you want to do.

As for the heads you have, the N47 is identical to the N42 with one exception, the N47 has ROUND exhaust ports whereas the N42 has SQUARE ones. The square exhaust ports are by far the most common and thus the most desireable since manifolds/headers are easier to come by. The ONLY TWO heads that have the round ports are the N47 (1977-1980) and the P79 (1981-1983 non-turbo) [reference: http://datsunzgarage.com/heads/index.htm]. The N42 seems to be the most desireable for high power applications...which also means the N47 should be the same in terms of performance. The P90 also seems to be sought after though it has been said that it requires more work to obtain the higher performance from it (although it is also said that it flows better since it was the turbo head). There have also been write ups done on the E31 head for performance though these seems to be fewer and not as recent...has to do with the valve sizes and combustion chamber size/shape.

No matter what to reach your desired HP range with an N/A engine you will be boring and stroking it to the best of my knowledge...this means sourcing the pricey and sometimes hard to find LD28 crank from the deisel Maxima. These pop up on eBay with some frequency and prices start at $400 if you are lucky and go up to around $600. Then you have to decide which pistons to go with. And this is all assuming that you are going the ol' school method. If you talk with Eiji he will tell you that this is 80's technology and there is a better way now...of course that costs more money.

Like I said, do you research! There are a few websites out there dedicated to the 3.1L (or 3.2L) Z car engine. Search for things like 3.1L 3.2L Stroker and you will find plenty of reading material. Or you could just chose one of the afore mentioned options (i.e. V8, turbo, etc).

Hope that this helps. I've been looking researching these engines for a while to decide what I want to do and how much I have to save to do it.

FWIW I want the cool factor and sleeper nature of a 300HP+ L6 N/A engine...nobody would know what hit them until it's too late. Now I just have to sell a LOT more of the spare parts I have to reach that goal. ;)

I have to inject something here. First you threw out there 300 HP as if that was the minimum you would take, and I hear that a lot from many people. Mostly young ones. Judging by the poor grammar, and the rose colored glasses and your past cars, I would say your pretty young and very new to Z's. I also think your reality has been very skewed by reading too many magazines. Tuning a computer controlled modern turbo car is NOTHING Like tuning an old carburated inline 6. Other than they are both air pumps, they have little to nothing in common.

Now, lets get to business. What are you going to be using the car for? Realistically

Is it a daily driver, is it a show car, is it a track rat? This is very important.

Second, get 300 HP out of your head. There is nothing magical about that number. Vehicle weight, final drive ratio, good tires, suspension are all ways to make a car faster, that are FAR easier than monster HP to achieve and to live with day to day.

Third, make a budget and stick to it. Do not let costs creep up and up in search for a number you will never get. Remember this. Making N/A HP is like running an old muscle car in the quarter mile. It is easy to get it to run 14's, but it gets far more expensive to run 13's and exponentially expensive to run 12's. Same for HP. You can take a stock L24 and get 165 HP out of it with some good parts and tuning, but to get 200 HP gets far more expensive, and to get 250, it is a big step function costing more money. Pick a budget and let the HP fall where it may.

Third. The end result may be 220 HP with all your money spent, but keep in mind that true enjoyment comes from having a car that you can turn the key and reliably drive down the road and smile the whole time. It does not take monster HP to do this. Especially in a Z.

Good luck, and thanks for your service to our country.
