If they truly ARE plastic, the MEK in the stripper would likely deform them or mar the surface beyond repair. Additionally, the MEK would seep under the chrome trim piece on the light opening's edge and cause you trouble when you re-painted. You may have dodged a bullet.

If I wanted to ruin it I would just run it over with my truck. That plastic would be in a gooie pile using a chemical stripper. I think you have a 240z though which is metal, safe there.

I used paint stripper, that way I didn't have to try to remove the chrome surround without bending, or blasting to oblivion. Worked real well.
