Gav240z Posted December 25, 2002 Share #1 Posted December 25, 2002 Hey guys I'm looking to adjust the valve clearances in my 240z. I've done this before and it's not hard but this car has had a mild duration cam installed so I am wondering if this will mean a new set of specs for how far it should be adjusted. The lobes of course are gonna be sharper but should this affect how much clearance? I hope this post is making sense.Anyway I would also like to know how you'd know if your car is running too lean and what happens when you burn your valves? Apart from a loss in power would you have to reco the valves to correct this problem?I have a gut feeling the car is running a bit lean any help appreciated guys. biker Posted December 27, 2002 Share #2 Posted December 27, 2002 I had the same thing done as well and put in a mild cam. My mechanic told me to leave the settings as they are as according to the manual. The worst problem your going to have with running lean is the potential to burn a hole through the piston. Pull out the plugs and check how they are burning. If they are grey, boost up the fuel by half a turn and then take it for a run. Then check them again. The front carby is feeding 1,2,3 pistons and the back carby is feeding 4,5 and 6. (That is if you are running twin carby's) You adjust the fuel mixture by turning the nut out which is at the bottom of the SU Carb. You need to get all the plugs running at a light tan colour. Black is too rich, gey is too lean. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/4013-z-car-tuning/#findComment-21611 Share on other sites
Rick Posted December 27, 2002 Share #3 Posted December 27, 2002 Hey Biker, Just because you beat me at the Noosa hillclimb does not make you an authority on tuning. Victor Laury Posted December 27, 2002 Share #4 Posted December 27, 2002 That's an excellent shot! Is that your car, Rick? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/4013-z-car-tuning/#findComment-21643 Share on other sites
biker Posted December 31, 2002 Share #5 Posted December 31, 2002 Mr Blundell In many years to come they will look at the record book and see that Biker beat Yellow 240Z by a big margin!!! They will then surmise that the green Z must have been better tuned than the yellow one!! Great photo - where did you get the digital version??? Rick Posted January 2, 2003 Share #6 Posted January 2, 2003 OK Biker, You must explain to the members that your green 240Z has a 260 lump in it and has more power than the yellow 240Z which is stock standard! When is the next sprint event at Willowbank which being a flat circuit may be better suited to the yellow 240Z with less power? As I said before the yellow Z now handles well but is short of the necessary horsies needed to get up with the front runners. You need grunt in hillclimbs which is where the better torque of your motor shows in the results. The Leyburn digital photo was scanned off a picture taken by Marshall Cass photographers. See you at the next event. Rick Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/4013-z-car-tuning/#findComment-21970 Share on other sites
