9teen7t240z Posted March 13, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 13, 2012 I had my dealer-installed early 240z (april, 1970 production date) removed from my car when I had it painted a few years ago. I had the old-style compressor rebuilt in anticipation of returning the system to the car upon completion of the restoration. Subsequently, I decided not to re-install the A/C system and am now planning to sell the parts. My problem is this....I have a condensor, the rebuilt compressor, interior switches, etc. but am not sure if there are any other parts that should be in the system or where they would be located on the car (i.e. evaporator, dryer, hoses, etc.) Can anyone help with a description/diagram of the various A/C components that were originally installed on the early '70 240z's? Thank you in advance for your help.Mike9teen7t240z Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/42598-need-help-with-early-240z-ac-system/ Share on other sites
hr369 Posted March 13, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 13, 2012 there is an evaporator behind the dash. i believe you have to take out the dash to remove it in the 240. I'de just leave it in.Its not worth the trouble of possibly cracking your dash to get to it. fwiw i took out the old aftermarket system in my 280 and sold the complete system on ebay for a couple hundred. i think i was very lucky getting that high price. the dash had to come out in my 280 to remove mine. why not sell the parts with the car? you're in az where a/c is mandatory.is the buyer from az? xs10shl Posted March 13, 2012 Share #3 Posted March 13, 2012 Different A/C systems were installed differently in a 240Z, based on my experience. The typical installations I've seen have the control located at the driver's knee or just under the dash, and the evaporator in the passenger footwell. I'd imagine it can be installed/removed without taking out the dashboard. If you follow the A/C hose as it snakes around the car, you'll eventually get to all the components, such as the dryer (typically located on one of the inner fenders) compressor (running on a pulley off of the crank pulley), condenser (typically in front of the radiator), thermostat (usually attached to the evaporator), and evaporator itself. The factory s30 A/C system (not available as an option for a 240Z, but potentially retrofit-able should someone have elected to do so) would have the evaporator be located behind the center console, and the controls integrated with the heater control system. In this case, you'd probably have to remove the dash to get at it. 9teen7t240z Posted March 14, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted March 14, 2012 Thanks much for the help, guys. From your description, it seems that the only part I might be missing is the dryer. Guess the restoration shop must have needed that part for some other project:( Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/42598-need-help-with-early-240z-ac-system/#findComment-383984 Share on other sites
2Forty Posted March 14, 2012 Share #5 Posted March 14, 2012 I think I saw a dryer on OEM surplus parts. Not sure if it is useable on a Z. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/42598-need-help-with-early-240z-ac-system/#findComment-383987 Share on other sites

Kurbycar32 Posted March 30, 2012 Share #8 Posted March 30, 2012 The dryer is full of sylca beads that absorb moisture and after being exposed to the elements (or being 40 years old) it looses its effectiveness anyway. I would suggest not re-using the dryer even if you had it. I have a 260z that came with the dealer air, i just removed it and am installing a 280z system in its place.
