ms260z Posted May 17, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 17, 2012 I have a 260Z with about 157,000 miles. I am about to change the oil for the first time and need some opinions on oil and filter to use. I live in Ms where the temps in the summer will get up to 100 degrees. Thanks!! Powderkeg Posted May 17, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 17, 2012 I'm assuming this isn't the first oil change in it's history.I can't say which oil is the best so I'll let others chime in. I use Castrol Hi Mileage. For oil filters I like Nissan, Baldwin, and K&N. My Z is basically stock and was used as a daily driver. There's a controversy about the quality of Fram filters which you can find in the archives. I'd also do a search for oils as this has been covered before. 72 OJ Posted May 17, 2012 Share #3 Posted May 17, 2012 (edited) The key factor is a quality filter and oil, I use a Napa premium short filter and Mobil 1 synthetic oil 5w20 in my 72 Z with a built L26 motor Edited May 17, 2012 by 72 OJ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/43246-whats-the-best-engine-oil-and-filter-to-use-in-260z/#findComment-390356 Share on other sites
LeonV Posted May 17, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 17, 2012 Consult the FSM for viscosity. Use oil with high ZDDP content. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/43246-whats-the-best-engine-oil-and-filter-to-use-in-260z/#findComment-390359 Share on other sites
ms260z Posted May 17, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted May 17, 2012 Thanks, no it's not the 1st oil change in it's history, I hope!! I have owned it a couple of months and just now getting it road worthy. I don't know what oil the previous owner used. Just wanting to get started off right. It is not a daily driver, just weekend fun ride. Thanks again........ Hunter260Z Posted May 17, 2012 Share #6 Posted May 17, 2012 Oil filter nothing but NissianOil, I would use Valvoline Racing oil with ZDDP. Ray Martin Posted May 17, 2012 Share #7 Posted May 17, 2012 In my 2.8ltr engine i use Millers semi-synthetic 20W/50 with a K&N HP-3001 oil filter. With the high temperatures you've mentioned have you considered an oil cooler? Zedyone_kenobi Posted May 18, 2012 Share #9 Posted May 18, 2012 I think there is a new valvoline oil out there that was on GearZ on speed TV a few weeks about with a huge amount of Zinc inside. VR1 I think. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/43246-whats-the-best-engine-oil-and-filter-to-use-in-260z/#findComment-390469 Share on other sites
siteunseen Posted May 19, 2012 Share #10 Posted May 19, 2012 Would synthetic VR1 10w30 be better for a newly rebuilt motor or would the petroleum VR1? They both have the high zinc and phosphorus content. When I took the motor apart it was dark brown, almost black on the inside, crank, pistons and cam. Would synthetic do that to the motor? Bonzi Lon Posted May 19, 2012 Share #11 Posted May 19, 2012 On my newly rebuilt engine, 10k miles over a 4 year period, I've used regular 10w30 with a dose of my ZDDP of choice, www.cam-shield.com with a genuine Nissan 15208-43G0A filter, changed every 3000 miles on the dot.Bonzi Lon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/43246-whats-the-best-engine-oil-and-filter-to-use-in-260z/#findComment-390523 Share on other sites
