maton_acoustic Posted June 2, 2012 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2012 Hi there, I'm trying to decide wether to opt and go for fender flares or not. I want to go for something like a 15x10 wheel. Would it still be necessary to cut body metal away for flare fitment with this size wheel? Thanks, Dave. Zedyone_kenobi Posted June 2, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2012 Not sure, but that is a lot of tire. What are you plans for power to turn those massive tires. epsark Posted June 2, 2012 Share #3 Posted June 2, 2012 I'm not sure either whether you need flares for sure. I am running 225/50R16's and they are about 9 inches wide. I ran into an issue when I had my car painted again. The car had fender flares that had been worked into the body and required what turned out to be some extensive work. We decided to cut out the bad sections and just go with stock rear quarter panels. They came out great, byt every time I went over a big bump or turned right I would end up scraping on the fender lip. We tried rolling the edge a number of times, but that only did so much. So, ended up cutting the metal in the rear and welding the seam to put the fender flares on. I think they came out great! My personal opinion. So, you need to decide if fender flares are a look you like and can live with them if you need to go that route. Sounds to me though with the 10 inch width your going to run into trouble, maybe just not all the time. maton_acoustic Posted June 3, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted June 3, 2012 Wheel selection is something that i've never been faced with so if I'm honest i'm not exactly sure what i'd need to make a wheel look right with these flares?! I prefer the look of flares mind. The thought of cutting away metal doesn't bother me. I'm trying to make a rushed decision right now whether or not to go for flares because i've got an opportunity to pick up more sensible wheels at a really good price. maton_acoustic Posted June 9, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted June 9, 2012 What sort of wheels options are suitable for the fender flare mod then? I guess I'd like to try and pull it off with the smallest wheel possible and limit the negative effects on performance and ride. Thanks Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/43400-question-regarding-fender-flares/#findComment-392499 Share on other sites
Kuro Posted June 14, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 14, 2012 What do you mean negative effects on performance and ride? The smallest wheel possible is not necessarily the answer. A properly fitting wheel is. You don't 'have' to cut away at the fender, but if you want it to look right (and go with a wheel/tire combo that is wider to fill out the flares), you probably will want to.
