Hello,

It might be more appropriate to put this under "Parts Swapping," but I'll let you all be the judge:

My '71 has the stock L24 blocked matted to a Roadster 5-Speed. I'm going to replace the clutch. Two Questions:

1) I obtained (free) a 280z clutch disc/ pressure plate. Can this setup be used with this block/transmission?

2) Throwout bearing: Would I need to find the appropraite bearing for a Roadster Transmission? I assume this differs from the 240z bearing (?)

Thank you!

Thanks much,

I actually took a whole 280z clutch setup from a car Eiji was parting out, so I suspect I have the collar. I'd love to swap this tranmission for a ZX 5-Spd, but everyone is asking $450+ on CL recently. Seems nuts to have to drop it again when I finally find a Trans, but the siezed clutch needs to be fixed.

Its bolted in there without issue. Todd down at Tidewater made a good point: Since this car was built in '82, there probably wasn't a robust used supply of ZX 5-Speeds... the Roadster 5-Spd would have been about 10-15 years old, probably easy to find a good used one.

At any rate, if you know anyone with an '81-'83 5-Spd here in VA, send them my way!

Are you sure it's a "Roadster" box and not one of the early Competition Boxes?

To use the 5 spd from the roadster, one had to change the bellhousing, the output shaft and the tail housing. Nissan Competition sold the parts necessary to accomplish the reconfiguration. In which case you wound up with the stock gearing that came in the roadster.

An alternative - was to buy the 5spd.'s from Nissan Competition Parts - which was available with three or four different ratio gear sets. Some of these early Type "A" competition boxes can be very expensive to buy today depending on which gear set is installed. So I'd be sure to determine the exact gear ratio's in that early box - before you try to sell it.

FWIW,

Carl B.

Carl,

Now you've got me excited to dig into the car this weekend. I'd be willing to bet it's a roadster tranny though, since the only information I have about the car came from the folks that built it. They did a confusing mix of work considering they left the car looking only lightly modified from the exterior. I'll let you know what I find out this weekend,
