Today at 9 in the morning i got my 4th z car. its just basically a parts car but still. anyways heres my question of the day, the previous owner rebuilt the motor, .030 over bore, stock compression, phase 1 cam, new timing chain, ported and polished head and intake, new oil pump, flushed radiator, and malery dual point dizzy. he says it cuts out mid range rpm, pops thru the carbs, fouls plugs, and lacks power. also says he has changed the jets, advanced curve in dizzy, checked cam timing with degree wheel and the motor still runs poorly.

This is on a 73 240z with a e88 head. and it is running 32-36 dgv weber carbs.

i heard these carbs weren't the best.

On my 260z i had trouble with it running, but i had su carbs that were way out of tune. and once i repaired them it was a world of difference

So anybody have any suggestions?

While the SU carbs would be ideal, those Weber DGV carbs should be perfectly serviceable. The Weber conversion kit was available as a CARB approved conversion in California and I'm pretty sure were offered as a dealer option so I have actually seen several sets installed on Z's in perfect running order here in the land of tree-huggers. Bottom line: theres no reason they shouldnt work and you already own them, rebuild em and make em work.

I seem to recall the E88 head came from a 280 Z, with maybe square ports? A 240 Z has an E 31 head with round ports? Do the exhaust and intake shapes on the head match the exhaust and intake shapes? This could be your problem. Carb issue, i too had carb issues. Bit the bullet and had the carbs overhauled my Z Therapy. They now run great!

The 280Z first had an N42 head followed by the N47. The E88 was, I believe a later 240Z head? I have too many other facts and figures to remember in real life so I can't be too sure but this is my recollection.

Wow! CARB has been around since '73? I know of only 2-3 cars that have them (DGV). They run pretty bad for those guys. Fuel comes out of suspension in the manifold from what I hear. I would get SU's but if he wants to try and rebuild, good luck.

1967 baby! I actually ran into a DGV powered 260z that was wrecked in the junkyard, it had all of the original CARB exemption tags so I snagged them just in case they retroactively roll back smog exemption (again).

well luckily i was able to put together a set of carbs. i did it with out a rebuild kit so there not 100% but after the swap she runs 90% better. it kind of strange after all the work put into the motor they didnt put a header on it.
