NEW 1974 260z owner

just got it last week.

replaced :

fuses,ignition coil,spark plugs, wires , distributor cap & rotor, ignition switch.

new battery .

only hear clicking on inside of car (passenger side)

tested started is good and can turn crank by hand.

cant figure out what is causing car not to crank and starter is not engaging.

PLEASE HELP!! all help appreciated.

Btw i did do a search and use google which led me to this forum . :cry:

The 260Z's apparently are known for having weak voltage to the starter solenoid. Some people recommend a relay to get full battery power to it.

Of course, if your battery is weak, the problem gets even worse. Are you sure it has a full charge?

The battery is at full charge i made sure to have the trickle charger on it for 2 days and i checked with a volt meter.

sorry if i forgot to mention this but the starter did not make any noises .

i even took off the starter today and had it tested then removed radiator fan to turn the crank by hand to make sure it wasnt seized.

Because the autoparts store guy was saying startings only spin up to 40lbs anything more and it wont spin.

ill be checking if theres enough power going to starter tomorrow after noon then i will post updates :D

my first carburetted car so im really at a lost .

First Test: short the starter + and solenoid spade terminals with a screwdriver and see if it spins.

Second Test: measure voltage to solenoid with key at START. If it's less than 10V, there is too much voltage drop. If it's zero, then it could be wiring, interlock, etc.

I wired in a $5 relay to solve this issue on my 260Z. I've also disabled the interlock.

i checked voltage to starter big blue positive cable has 12 volts , the spade has zero when i had a friend turn the key to start. also the button for emergency start in the engine bay is broken .

No idea if it even works.

how would i go about bypassing this interlock with a relay??

Heck, Leon. I'd just push a button as the first test with a 74. LOL

I'd be willing to bet money that the interlock is what is dropping the voltage to the solenoid, too.

Very well could be!

My EDIS module and relay/fuse panel rests where that button used to be... :)
