Andy@hardy Posted October 19, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2013 My z will start and idle, run a few seconds and die. If I punch gas it dies immediately. If I feather gas I can make it scream. To date I have replaced, wires, plugs, cap, and button. AFM, throttle body position switch, fuel filter and battery. Have not yet checked fuel pressure. Please anyone......... Hodgimus-maximus Posted October 20, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2013 (edited) Sounds like timing might be off if you are Lucy but it could be plugged/leaky injectors or a bad fuel pump. SteveJ Posted October 20, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 20, 2013 Will it run under load? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/47749-77-280-z-22-wont-drive/#findComment-434095 Share on other sites
Andy@hardy Posted October 20, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted October 20, 2013 Sounds like timing might be off if you are Lucy but it could be plugged/leaky injectors or a bad fuel pump.I'm definitely no mechanic, but I flew to Detroit when I bought car. Drove over 750 miles without a hiccup to Atlanta.Even touched 115 mph a couple of times.could it still be timing? I'm leaning towards fuel pump. Monday I'm going to "cut in" a fuel pressure gauge. It will be permanent . Tomorrow I will be cutting the fuel filter I replaced to look for rust. Thank you for replying. Andy@hardy Posted October 20, 2013 Author Share #5 Posted October 20, 2013 It will, but only as long as I'm feathering gas. When I stop, it stops.Thank you for responding. Andy@hardy Posted October 20, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted October 20, 2013 Not sure if this will have any bearing on problem, but I have also replaced the exhaust manifold due to a leak. Along with a 5 speed trans. Problem showed up less than 50 miles after this work. That's when I went for all the other parts I mentioned Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/47749-77-280-z-22-wont-drive/#findComment-434099 Share on other sites
Andy@hardy Posted October 20, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted October 20, 2013 Where will I find the fuel pump relay, just to cover bases? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/47749-77-280-z-22-wont-drive/#findComment-434100 Share on other sites
Hodgimus-maximus Posted October 20, 2013 Share #8 Posted October 20, 2013 Your fuel pump relay is under your dash above the ecu. Down load a copy of the efi bible it makes trouble shooting the efi system a lot simpler than the factory service manual. It can be found at http://www.4moores.com/280z/files/280zfuelinjectionbook.pdf If you drove it that much and then it started acting up then its not the timing. Did you let it sit at all? the gas in your car could have gone bad or there might even be rust in your fuel tank. That is what happened to my car. Ended up having to replace the fuel pump, and the injectors. Andy@hardy Posted October 21, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted October 21, 2013 The car has 50,000 miles. Interior looks brand new. No tears, cracks, or wear of any kind. She has sat up for a long time. However the PO told me all this and that he had done a complete gas line drain and overhaul. And that he had been driving it off and on for about 6 months. And like I said, from Detroit to Atlanta I felt like a 20 year old again. Stopped 3 times for gas. No incidents. Tomorrow I'm going to cut open fuel filter I replaced to look for rust. This past tree weeks is the longest it's sat up since I've had it.but only because of this problem.
