Wow.......15 gallons

I can confirm, unless the gas station has rigged their flow meters, that my 1972 240z will hold 15 gallons of gas (most likely a gallon in the filler neck) until the pump shuts off. I know this may not be news to anyone else, but I was always struggling with filling issues due to pinched/clog vent lines. I finally cleaned the mess up when I was doing the Wolf Creek CV swap and fixed all the issues. I added 5 gallons of gas via a can at home, when to the same pump 30 minutes later and added another 10 gallons of gas.

I also finally re-calibrated my Speedhut programmable fuel gauge. I swapped senders 1.5 years ago and did not recalibrate due to the PITA it is draining a tank. Well, now was the time and boy I am glad I did. My old sender was off a little bit on the empty side. I found out that it would read 1/4 tank when empty (the new sender was reporting 1/4 tank when the tank was empty).

Still, I was shocked when I put a full 15 gallons of gas i my car. Hell, my 2012 Mazda 5 does not have a tank that large.

15 gallons is a lot more than I thought they held. After a tank removal a few years ago, so it was then bone dry I put ten gallons from 5 gallon cans and 5.653 gallons at the gas station in my 240Z tank but driving 5 miles to the gas station and some idling have to be subtracted out of that. That makes three decimal places with a fudge factor, boondoggle engineering. Total for me was then 15.653 minus whatever got burned driving 5 miles.

IIRC, the specs are 15.9 gallon. However, when the tank is empty and the engine won't run due to lack of fuel, there will be about a gallon plus still left in the tank. The fuel pick-up line is about an inch off of the floor of the tank to prevent 'bottom of the tank stuff' from entering the system. The original stock float will also be off of the floor of the tank when reading empty.

As luck would have it, I was working on the fuel gauge from my '70 Z yesterday (I have all the gauges out of the dash as part of my on-going refreshtoration). While cleaning the painted gauge face, I noticed that the script, '60L' appears in a tiny font right next to the 'Full' mark. Never saw that before. Sixty litres equals 15.85 US gallons.

I noticed I can get almost 16 gallons in mine, but it starts running a little funny if I let it get too low...around 2 gallons or so remaining. I have a carter fuel pump and it starts making a lot of noise (more than usual even) until I fill it up. Must be at that point it's straining to keep the fuel running through the lines. I'm pretty happy with the mileage, though (combined about 20, highway only is 27 or so), so I'm pretty happy with it.

Mine has always read 60 Liters but I can only get 10 gallons in at the pump. I believe my fuel sending unit may have been installed crooked and reads empty early, with several gallons still in the tank. Next time I have it on the lift I'll have to look.

60 liters is large here, some german cars hold 85 liters or more. With the fuel prices here that's not gonna make you happy.

The float might be getting hung up on one of the wound wires used to complete the contact from the float arm.

I checked some old correspondence, including all the statistics I got from Nissan Headquarters back in 70, 71. Bonzi Lon is correct, 15.9 gallons.
