I'm finally removing the automatic transmission out of my 71 240Z and installing a 5 speed thats out of a 78 280Z. After checking out as many threads on this subject, it seems that the "rear engine plate" is different for either transmission. So whats the difference between the two? Just curious.

My understanding is that the main difference, and maybe the only one, is that the bottom portion of the automatic plate is removable so that the torque converter bolts can be installed and torqued.  The plate is actually just a dust and water shield so that makes sense.

Here's the different plates.  Automatic on the left.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure, not 100% positive.  I have a few and that was the only different looking one so I assumed it's off an automatic motor i bought a while back.

Automatic engine plates are a two piece affair. It allows the mating of the torque converter to the flex plate after the transmission is mounted.

Parts manual shows two plate numbers L24 through the L28. 30411-E3000 til 7/73 and 30411-R8600 after. Images of both versions show the triangular opening.

I have no idea where the round hole version came from.

Do you have your swap parts all gathered? I can help with that if you need goodies. Clutch pedal? engine plate? hydraulic line? Let us know what you need.

Don't forget the knock the spacer off the end of the crank and to put a pilot bushing in the guide hole in the end of the crank.

I did disassemble a ZX with a 5 speed last summer so that could be the one with the circle. The triangle one is off a '72 4 speed I took apart last week, it was still in the pile of parts to be cleaned.

Sorry for any confusion.

Also I would think you would want to add the hose mount to the frame of the car. I had to add it on my car. It holds the connection from the hard line to the flex hose on the frame side of the car, below the battery on the inside of the frame rail.
