Dave WM Posted July 7, 2016 Share #97 Posted July 7, 2016 swapped connectors from thermotime and temp sensor would surely be a huge problem. jlenownnab Posted July 7, 2016 Author Share #98 Posted July 7, 2016 Friday morning we are meeting now, I hate when work gets in the way of my Z time. We will start with setting the timing back, adjusting the tps then checking the cold temp sensor. siteunseen Posted July 7, 2016 Share #100 Posted July 7, 2016 You should clean those sensor's connections really good too. http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/electricalconnections/index.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/55727-alternator-not-powering-battery/?page=9#findComment-498322 Share on other sites
jlenownnab Posted July 8, 2016 Author Share #101 Posted July 8, 2016 Here's the deal. I got there early and spent an hour or so checking connections and cleaning a few grounds, I have to say almost zero corrossion anywhere in the engine compartment. He showed up and checked the temp sensor, it's the #13 pin in the 75. The reading was 1.8 at around 80 degrees f, so pretty close. next we adjust the tps and retry the testing in the 3 and 18 pin. Still not getting the proper reading. I then brought to his attention you can adjust inside of tps, bingo! The 3 little copper arms that are sticking down were not touching at the right times. My mechanic did not know the tps was adjustable inside but after letting him know that he new exactly how it worked and said it was super simple. He actually had to bend the middle copper lead so that it touched the others at the right times. It seemed to be slightly hesitant still, but.... the backfireing seemed to stop. Along the way he adjusted the timing and after a test drive he checked the timing and it was 13. Hopefully cold start in the morning is positive. 1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/55727-alternator-not-powering-battery/?page=9#findComment-498348 Share on other sites
Zed Head Posted July 8, 2016 Share #102 Posted July 8, 2016 Sounds like progress. The TVS is an important component. Ignition timing needs to be right also, of course. If you get to where it runs great, but just has a slight hesitation at mid-range throttle, consider adjusting the coolant temperature sensor circuit resistance. It's a common fix. The 280Z's seem to have been tuned to the edge originally for emissions and economy, and many have ended up too lean over the years. http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/tempsensorpot/index.html And, of course, fuel pressure, Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/55727-alternator-not-powering-battery/?page=9#findComment-498350 Share on other sites
jlenownnab Posted July 9, 2016 Author Share #103 Posted July 9, 2016 If the car sits and idles for a few minutes it's good to go. In the first 2 minutes it has a slight hesitation when revving and not a backfire but a cough..... so to speak. So progress made, we will check the coolant sensor Monday. Thanks for all your help. Dave WM Posted July 9, 2016 Share #104 Posted July 9, 2016 A video of this would help to understand exactly what is sound like. Do you notice this while driving? siteunseen Posted July 9, 2016 Share #105 Posted July 9, 2016 Coughing to me would be leaning out. Try restricting the fuel return hose to add more fuel.
