Grant83 Posted July 18, 2016 Share #1 Posted July 18, 2016 If the cam lobe is wearing on the low side what does this mean? When it's not supposed to engage the rocker downward. Does the valve need adjusted? I've got some gold discoloration going on and it looks like it's wearing prematurely compared to the other lobes which look fine. I'd expect the raised lobe to wear first not the off side of the cam. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/55826-cam-lobe-wear/ Share on other sites
Zed Head Posted July 18, 2016 Share #2 Posted July 18, 2016 The mousetrap springs put a small amount of pressure on the cam lobe circle, the part of the lobe that should have lash (a gap). But if you're seeing extensive wear the lash might have decreased to zero. This can happen when valve seats wear. The simple thing to do is to measure lash, using feeler gauges. That will tell you if you have a big problem. Always a good idea to check lash on a regular basis anyway. But, the gold coloration could just be oil residue left over because lash is correct and there is no wear to rub it off. As it should be. If it's oil residue you'll be able to polish it off easily. siteunseen Posted July 18, 2016 Share #3 Posted July 18, 2016 I've seen those mousetrap springs put on wrong. Probably no big deal but you should compare images. Agree with Zed, bluing is a problem. The honey colored gold is like varnished oil, untouched build up. LeonV Posted July 18, 2016 Share #4 Posted July 18, 2016 Can you post a good photo of the lobe in question and it's rocker arm? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/topic/55826-cam-lobe-wear/#findComment-499066 Share on other sites
Grant83 Posted July 19, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted July 19, 2016 I'll borrow some feeler gauges and report back. The springs I'll double check as well. A photo would probably help a ton, I'll see what I can do there too.
