Hi all,

I wanted to let you know that I've added a new feature to the site.  This new feature will allow you to "Like" and "Dislike" any post that is made in our forum.  The idea behind this feature is to allow users to give anonymous feedback about any post on our club.  It also keeps track of the amount of feedback any member receives and counts it against his/her reputation on the site.  Previously we only had the "like" button.

To use this new feature, simply look for the above graphic at the end of every post.  Green (up arrow) is "I like it", and Red (down arrow) is "I don't like it" feedback.  Hope you enjoy the new feature !

Mike

Hi Mike,

Don't mean to be negative, but I'm not sure I like the idea of a "Dislike" button. If I don't like a post, I generally ignore it, some others post a negative comment about it and we have seen were that ends.

I don't log in much atm due to personal reasons, but what I see latly is a couple of threads in the last month have turn nasty over trivial comments.

The dislike button may attract more of that, and not knowing who did it can be very frustrating for the original poster and then the trust is gone altogether.

I would monitor it carefully.

Still, keep up the good work, it's a great site and the friendly, helpfull members make it a joy to visit.

I agree that the Dislike button may take some of the friendliness out of the discussion process.  Some people thrive on conflict and negativity and the button will just feed their need.  When I don't like something or someone on the forum, the Ignore button generally works for me.  My wife, the psychologist, would point out that positive reinforcement is far more effective than negative reinforcement.

Another question is how will the feedback get back to the original poster? Do they get a notice that their post was liked / disliked? Does the post keep a tally of the responses. I sort of liked the feedback from others on the forum that would like a post I made. It sort of reinforces that whatever I posted was viewed as relevant of helpful, then I qualify this with who the commenter was and whether I liked them...<_<

If you hover your pointer over the little heart it shows "who gave reputation".  Edit - actually you have to click on the heart.

Hybridz did a great job of maintaining civility, in the recent past.  They've slacked a bit but they still jump in to the bad threads quickly, making it very clear what is acceptable and what's not.  The recent problems on this site have been mainly because the negative behavior hasn't been corrected in a timely fashion.  Hybridz has an obvious report button and response is rapid.  Often they don't even explain why a post is gone, they just make it disappear.  The key though, is speed of response.

psdenno down-arrowed Mike's first post.  Click n the heart and it will show.  I'll go ahead and try it too and we'll see if both of us show up.  I assume that an upgrade will take it back to zero.

Edit - just tried it.  It shows me and psdenno, with -2 for Mike.  Then an up arrow took away my down arrow, back to -1.  It only shows in the post though, it doesn't follow the person around.  So, it's not really a reputation thing, it's just a dislike of the specific post.

I get too involved in this stuff..............

I'd like to think that we're "above" a dislike button. It's too easy for one to dislike something before having an opportunity to listen to everyone's opinion.  I personally enjoy an "active discussion" until it gets down to name calling (Elem.School behavior). I'm glad it's NOT anonymous. We all need to take responsibility for our actions.

Grannyknot, Great response!

Interestingly, if you hit the Dislike button on a post and then later hit the Like button, it removes your Dislike.  I tried it on Mike's post and then hit Dislike again to reregister my dislike of the Dislike button.  Since Likes cancel Dislikes and Dislikes cancel Likes, the poster, and everyone else, has no idea what the true attitude is toward a given post.  So, I feel the value of the button isn't there.

Yes, let's keep an eye on this feature, I can always go back to the standard "like" button if this one causes too much pain.  I moved over to this idea because I thought it would be a great way to post negative feedback WITHOUT the drama of responding.  But, certainly if it causes more problems, I'll remove it.

The feedback should send the user a notification about their post (positive or negative).  When I logged in just now the system told me "somebody gave you reputation in the XXYY topic"  See attachment.

So it's not anonymous!

So everybody just takes sides!!

Like some of the more recent hotly debated threads...:(

It is supposed to be anonymous.  For instance, it does nothing for me if I hover over the heart.  I will have to revisit the group settings to see if I have it configured correctly.

Mike, you gave me a negative on this post but all I did was explain how the heart button worked!  How can that be bad?  #7 above.
