Hi all,

I wanted to let you know that I've added a new feature to the site.  This new feature will allow you to "Like" and "Dislike" any post that is made in our forum.  The idea behind this feature is to allow users to give anonymous feedback about any post on our club.  It also keeps track of the amount of feedback any member receives and counts it against his/her reputation on the site.  Previously we only had the "like" button.

To use this new feature, simply look for the above graphic at the end of every post.  Green (up arrow) is "I like it", and Red (down arrow) is "I don't like it" feedback.  Hope you enjoy the new feature !

Mike

  • Hey guys, looks like there's an overwhelming response (and some good healthy discussion against the negative rating) so I went back to the original "like this" feature.

  • Hi Mike, Don't mean to be negative, but I'm not sure I like the idea of a "Dislike" button. If I don't like a post, I generally ignore it, some others post a negative comment about it and we have

Ok, I found the setting.  Reputation is now completely anonymous.  Regular members can give 5 positive or 5 negative reputation points per day, so choose wisely. :)

Mike, you gave me a negative on this post but all I did was explain how the heart button worked!  How can that be bad?  #7 above.

Yea, I was just testing.  No reason for the negative reputation... I fixed it. ;)

Interestingly, if you hit the Dislike button on a post and then later hit the Like button, it removes your Dislike.  I tried it on Mike's post and then hit Dislike again to reregister my dislike of the Dislike button.  Since Likes cancel Dislikes and Dislikes cancel Likes, the poster, and everyone else, has no idea what the true attitude is toward a given post.  So, I feel the value of the button isn't there.

That's like voting.  I make my Dad so mad every four years by telling him I cancelled his vote with mine. :D

I think the feature is there to encourage positive or engaging posts, but, not to act like a voting system for every single message.  When a negative post is made, the members have a way to speak up without using the "report post" feature.  It's not meant to be a substitution for healthy disagreements.

As it stands now, you can have 24 ups, and 25 downs, and it will look like only one person cared enough to click an arrow.  I think that's the point psdenno was making.  It was more interesting when you could see who clicked.  Some people's clicks are worth more than others.

Since you can't see who clicked, people will still respond if they feel a point needs to be made.  That's what discussions are about, point/counterpoint.  Otherwise, it's just one person talking and everyone else silently pointing their thumb up or pointing it down. having the thumbs counted, and showing the difference.  Pretty boring, but funny to imagine.

It looks like you're trying to make the site run itself.  Automated moderating.  Doesn't seem like it's possible.

I personally think there are waaaayyyy to many features on this site already . It's getting overwhelming for me. I'd go back to the old CZCC site in a heart beat. I see notifications on my phone but nothing happens when I click on it. So if anyone is liking my posts or quoting me I wouldn't know.

Sorry guys if I don't hit the like button on your posts , but I don't remember to most of the time . I always thought seeing a bunch of views on a thread pretty much said whether it was liked or not- or maybe just hot!

my attraction to this site was it was full of the classic knowledge of the Z car, not the gadgets on the site.

no disrespect to you MIKE - I know you put a lot of work into this

my 2 cents

That's why I wanted to make it anonymous.  Looking at WHO liked or disliked a post doesn't really tell us if the post should stay.  However, if a post has a number of anonymous dislikes, we can make a judgement as to the viability of a post by a vote.  The person disliking a post shouldn't matter.

As far as moderation, my goal in adding this feature was to encourage useful information sharing, not to make our job easier.  The idea was to discourage useless bantering or flame wars.  How can this help?  Users may think twice about starting flame wars if negative ratings bring their reputation down.  Take my profile for instance, if I started posting a lot of negativity, my reputation score would go down.  Likewise, if I post a lot of positive information that helps other members, my reputation will go up.  The old system didn't account for negativity, it only rewarded positive behavior while allowing negative behavior to go without judgement.  The final judgement was up to our moderation team (and still is).  However, whenever we would throw out a warning, we were always being second-guessed, even if our rules were being broken.

By providing a positive and negative rating system, everyone gets a chance to help moderate a topic.  This was the initial idea anyway....

Thanks, I don't think your post had any disrespect.  I like feedback from you guys.  This is an example of a healthy argument about this topic and it helps me determine what should stay or what should be removed.  I agree there are a lot of features, but, this is likely due to the fact that I am a programmer and this site allows me to have fun experimenting with new ideas.  If we had less features, it would certainly make my life a lot easier.  Anyway, if you guys want to start a topic on the features of the site, let's start a separate discussion because this would interest me.

So as I post this my notifications start working . Is this the clairvoyant feature MIKE? LOL

Ha!  Another new feature idea... :bunny:

Not sure why it suddenly started working, maybe a setting in your profile has it turned off?
