Brake fluid leak @ booster

I have fluid slowly seeping from where the master fluid reservoirs bolt up to the booster. I replaced the smaller booster a year or so ago and don't remember.  Maybe it was sealant type gasket, silicone or something similar.

It sat for a couple of months then I finally drove it only to find a huge oily spot on the floor.  The front's bigger reservoir was empty but not the smaller one for the rear's.  I put a mirror under there and it's wet coming down from the crack between the masters and the booster.  Seems like something should be there?

In theory, a gasket is never required at that location, because there should never be brake fluid at that seam in the first place.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you've got a master cylinder problem.

Yeah that's the rear most seal on the Master that has gone. Since the M/C has to come off anyway you might as well disassemble it, maybe some crud got between the seal and the bore.

You didn't say whether or not it was a rebuild of the master cylinder.

My suspicion is that, if it was re-built, the cylinder bore is pitted and has chaffed the seals.

 Bite the bullet--- put an end to it and get a new master cylinder.

Glad you weren't drifting a hairpin when it gave loose.

We at CZCC kinda like you and want you around for some time to come.  Brakes are pretty damned important

Thank you guys!  It's the original master cylinder so rebuild or replace is in my future.  It's not bad yet and I  check the level before driving but it's curling the paint up underneath.  I'll shove a rag under there for now.

Yes it is.  It leaks and it's not supposed to.  Cheap and easy to replace and a good excuse to crack open a beer when the job is done

It's the original? Forget everything I said about taking it apart, it will be disgusting inside, throw it out and buy new.   You got your moneys worth out of it you cheap buggar

the inside of my brake booster was all crusty inside when I had the scary "idle drop when depressing the brakes" symptom.

Maybe it's not the original after all.  It has clear plastic caps and it seems the OE were Tokico or Nabco with metal caps like my 280.  No big deal, originality was lost long ago.  The ones I'm seeing all look the exact same, priced from $45 to $100.
