I noticed that we now have a "Level Number" by our names.  What does one have to do to get to a whole nuther level?  What's the highest level I can hope to achieve?

Hey guys,

Ah, you guys beat me to it. ;)  I updated the member "Rank" system yesterday, obviously.  The old system only had 5 ranks, and was shown with 1-5 stars.  The new system is 1-10 ranks and is achieved with the table below.  The Ranks system is set up to reward members based on number of contributions to the site.  I am open to feedback because the system was created by yours truly after a long night of programming.

As you can see, you don't get a rank at all until you post at least 10 times.  After that, it's a race to the 1,000 mark.  I stopped at 10 but there's probably room for more competition at the top level.  If you look at our Leaderboard, we have quite a few people with several thousand posts.  Right now, I've stopped at 10 (or 1,000 posts) because I didn't know how to create some competition for our frequent visitors.  I figured once you reach level 10, you've earned a place in the site legendary team.

Here's the table, let me know what you think!

Mike

After posting this, I decided that we need a way to welcome our new members.  Therefore, I've added a new member rank for anyone with 0-9 posts.  This rank is below.  The idea is anyone you see with this rank should be welcomed to our club with open arms.  We aren't a closed group, and I want to do our best to open ourselves up to new people joining our site.

The number of posts is there already.  Aren't the discussions reward enough?  No offense but the Level 10 doesn't really feel like a reward, it just happens if you've been around a while.

Not really a big fan of the Leaderboard either.  Why rank people?  The beauty of the internet forums is that we all start at the same level, and the words we write have their own inherent value.

I'm glad that at least I wasn't the first dissenting voice.

A rank established simply by number of posts sounds like a ploy to simply increase site traffic. It encourages posting simply for the sake of posting. It's unfortunate, but I'm sure there are people out there who will want to level-up for the reward. I don't like the idea of "ranking" at all, but if we must, I believe there should be some measure of quality to it.

The number of likes divided by the number of posts? Add a bonus point for any post that makes it to the FAQ? Maybe give newbies a point just to make their instagram snapping, twitter following, "everyone gets a trophy" existence palatable.

I think someone with 50 likes on 100 posts, two of which are good enough to be included in the knowledge base is much more valuable to the community than someone with 10 likes on 1000 posts and nothing good enough to ever need to be read twice.

I like the idea of a ranking derived by dividing "total posts" by "likes" to get a quality, not quantity, quotient. It becomes more of a value rating rather than a "participant" rating.

And maybe add a Forum just for us Grumpy old men who want to complain :D. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go yell at, and chase away, some kids who are standing on my sidewalk singing Christmas carols.

I find I use tapatalk almost exclusively these days on my phone. No ranking, leaderboard, reputation or anything. Just notifications when someone has posted in a thread you're subscribed to. Nice and clean.
I admit I occasionally look at the web version just to see how many "hits" my build thread has received. Gives me an idea of whether anyone cares if I post or not...

That's pretty cool. I like it. I think it's something to show for being active in something you enjoy. And I've been enjoying reading and posting on the site. I hope to stay pretty active on here and try to contribute when I can. And hopefully learn things I don't know. You can never stop learning.

Looking forward to hanging around and being part of it. Thanks everyone.

Have a great holiday season!
