Hi all, it looks like our typical Monday-morning slowdown is becoming more of a "thing" I am used to seeing.  However, it's starting to affect one of our busiest days at the club.  Monday's are our busiest traffic days, and I apologize if you are noticing the lag in site performance.

Anyway, the reason for the slowdown is due to our Sunday (Monday morning) backup to an offsite location.  As a result of the extremely slow performance today, I've decided to make a change to the schedule.  From now on, the script will run on Friday (Saturday morning).

We will have to let the backup finish today but next Monday the website lag shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers!

Mike

Started the morning with a 500 Server Error that resolved itself on the 2nd try.  No CZCC at breakfast is traumatic!

Yea, sorry guys, I'm hoping the new schedule will help.  Maybe it will affect the Saturday morning coffee but I'm thinking it will be quicker since that day is not a busy one for the club.

Looks like the slowdown happens every morning around 4-5am PST (-8 GMT).  I couldn't sleep this morning and logged in to find the memory and swap file totally slammed with our backup routine.  It may have been trying to re-run the failed backup from yesterday since I killed it.  However, I don't think rescheduling it will help long-term so I may need to do a little data organizing.  It's likely that I need to increase the swap space.  We have 48GB of RAM on the server and the swap is only 8GB.  From what I've been reading, swap space should be doubled or tripled.  Technical details I know.. but, I'm just putting it here for a record. :)

Found some interesting things today.  The backup routines seemed to have been stacking on top of each other, so, we had approximately 6 backups running at the same time.  I killed the processes and website performance has improved substantially.  I'll check status again in the morning, but, I suspect this should partially resolve the performance issues.  I also found out that our swap file isn't big enough.  After some research, I've determined that we need to install an additional disk to use for the swap.  Not a big deal, but, I do have to visit my storage unit to find some of my extra drives for the server.  I'm planning to install the swap drive as well as another drive and dedicate it to our nightly backup.  This should happen sometime next week.
